Re: Pollard to Indiana?

Ya know... there will be an AD (or should be) position open in IC... maybe it is that UI?

Outside of maybe NW, it's the most challenging AD job in the Big Ten; a step down from Iowa State.

No way.

Indiana a step down from ISU? You have to be kidding.

Indiana would be a step up from ISU.

However, it's strongly hurt Pollard's image to leave ISU while he's starting so much stuff.

can those of you saying Indiana would NOT be a step down from IState please justify. im not willing to jump your opinion, but at this point i dont see that its such a substantial step up as some of you are indicating.

We all remember making fun of our little brother. And then that day came when you looked at him and thought "Crap, when did he become taller than me?" There comes a time when you just know your time has passed and it's their spotlight now.

Anyplace can be a "step-up" if the price is right.

Re: Pollard to Indiana?

If Pollard markets himself as someone who gets the ball rolling, then his job is for the most part done. If his job is to see us through the entire process, then we can expect him to be here a long time.
The Indiana athletic department needs to be kicked out of sleep. Just like ISU needed to be when Pollard got here.

He'd have more money to work with, simple as that.

Indiana was 39th in the Director's Cup, ISU 58th.

It's not a huge step, but it's not a step that you could ride a bike up and over at a high speed.

Pollard is a genious: Who else gets a fan base so excited over teams that just aren't doing well.

Re: Pollard to Indiana?

my first response..... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

however, being a realist, we can't avoid the fact that this is going to happen every time a post comes open at another major university. I hate to stir the pot of Big 12 vs. Big 11, but Indiana is in the Big 11, which has a tv network, a much larger population density, and huge alumni bases. If I'm not mistaken, IU has pretty good non-revenue sports success along with a long-standing basketball tradition that is in the company of UNC, KU, Duke, and UCLA. It's not like people in Indiana don't like football (see: Notre Dame, Purdue, the Colts)... they haven't had the leadership at IU to generate the excitement... JP is a man who could probably do it.

hey, for old time sake, anyone remember during the '02 season when ISU was sky high in Sept./Oct. and DMac was actually being mentioned for the Mich. St. job?

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

He's making more here in Ames than he would at Indiana. The previous AD made 309k last year. JP has a base salary of 275k plus up to 75k in incentives.

They both get deferred compensation after a number of years, 30k at IU, 50k at ISU.

They could always throw more money at him, but I dont see him leaving.

I think what some people may have been implying is not just salary but Atheltic Department budget... IU alums are fanatical and I believe they are more willing to donate money, and at higher amounts.

It is true that their football hasn't been anything to brag about, but I remember when they had Randle El, they weren't bad, and didn't they make a bowl game in the past couple of years? I think they went 7-5 last year.

IU still recruits good basketball players. They just need a stable coach who isn't a sleeze.

As far as football goes, bloomington has 70,000 people, the school has 40,000 students. All someone needs to do there is bring excitement to the program.

I hope Pollard doesn't leave because I like they guy. Some people don't, but he's really good about answering e-mails and he's also willing to give time to talk to people.

I also think he's doing an awesome job here at ISU of course. He's trying to change the sports culture here, and I think it's challenging, but really great for a sports fan.

Re: Pollard to Indiana?

If I were giving JP advice, it would be to not go to Indiana. It's basically a level move for him. Indiana is stronger in hoops, but football is not very strong. Lots of competition in the area and a tough nut to crack. If he is patient (and I believe he will be) he will have better opportunities down the road. Besides, his kids like it here!

Re: Pollard to Indiana?

I've heard Pollard talk on the radio about being a guy who likes to see things through (and he mentioned Chizik is the same way), so don't get all caught up on things like his name being on someone's list. That's all it is right now. And there's certainly more things to "see through" here first.

Indiana = ISU

Having gone to both ISU & IU - I would consider the schools pretty equal. Sure IU has an outstanding basketball tradition- but we all know that FB is the key to building an athletic dept that is strong across the board & IU's FB program is in worse shape than the Clones. It's been a couple years since I saw IU's budget- but at that time it was $33M and that was equal to ISU.

If JP wants to take over an athletic department that was in the same condition as ISU 4 years ago - then IU is the perfect job. I would think he would want a different type of challenge in his next AD job.
