August 2008 Message From Pollard

I just got in the mail: Investing in Cyclone Excellence! A Strategic Financial Plan for Iowa State University Athletics - August 2008.

In it is the report card for the 8 Strategic Plan Benchmarks. Of the 8 goals, it is worth noting that 2 of them are "assigned" to the fan base. The others set goals for the athletes and teams.

So if you are not an athlete and are wondering how you can best help Iowa State, just look at goal number 3 and number 4. Buy football season tickets and join the Cyclone Club. If you haven't done that, you aren't helping Iowa State reach our goals.

Goal number 3 has already been met two years ahead of schedule, but we need to maintain and increase where we are. Goal number 4 has a ways to go to get to 10,000 Cyclone Club members by the year 2010.

I was a little disturbed Pollard's update didn't generate more discussion. So I went to Cyclones.com and looked for it. It doesn't appear to be posted yet, so maybe most people haven't seen it. It stacks up all the data from the rest of the conference and shows what we are up against. We need to do what we can as fans, and hopefully the football program will have some success to turbo-charge the momentum that fans have started to allow us to catch up and pass many of our peer institutions.

What I didn't realize until this letter is that the gap is widening. At one time several years ago, the bottom 6 or 7 schools were within spitting distance of each other; so being anywhere from 6th to 12th was more of a perception issue than a real issue. That is no longer true.
