Athletics Staffers Take Furloughs to Assist the University
AMES, Iowa - Four members of the Cyclone Athletics Department have each volunteered to take a one-week furlough in an effort to help ease financial challenges facing Iowa State University.
Newly appointed head football coach Paul Rhoads, basketball coaches Greg McDermott and Bill Fennelly and Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard have volunteered to work for one week without pay to help the Iowa State campus deal with the mid-year budget reductions recently ordered by Governor Chet Culver.
The furloughs will result in more than $50,000 in savings for the athletics department. The athletics department will transfer those savings to the University to assist the institution in funding $7 million in state appropriations that the state is withdrawing from the University as a result of tough economic times for state government.
“The financial hardships facing our campus and Dr. Geoffroy are very real and extremely challenging,” Pollard said. “Although our salaries are not paid by the State of Iowa, Paul, Greg, Bill and I - as the four highest compensated staff members in the athletics department - felt that taking a week’s furlough is an appropriate measure as the institution works diligently to cover the significant reductions in its operating budget.”
Pollard and the coaches understand the impact of the economic issues facing the state and nation.
“Whether its fans buying tickets or making donations to support our student-athletes, we are in challenging times right now,” Pollard said. “Our gesture will, hopefully, help our University during this difficult time.”
Pollard also noted that the athletics department recently announced season football ticket prices for 2009 would be unchanged and that deadlines for renewal have been moved back to assist fans dealing with economic challenges.
