Cyclones to Play for CSCHL Title

Living in Michigan finally had a perk for me today as I was able to take in the Iowa State - Illinois CSCHL Playoff Semifinal today in Dearborn.

The Cyclones knocked off its biggest rival 6-3 here today to advance to the championship game against Ohio. The game is set for 3 p.m. on Sunday.

I'll tell you what, this is easily the most talented Cyclone team I've seen live. They have all the pieces. Should the team win tomorrow, it will be the second Easton Cup for the Cyclones in three years. The team has won the Cup 12 times (the last coming in 2006).

I'll post an update tomorrow on what the boys did. Additionally, all the folks in Ames still have two more chances to see the Cyclone Hockey team at home this year. ISU will take on North Dakota State March 6th and 7th with both games at 7:30 p.m. at the Ames/ISU Ice Arena.

If you've never been to a Cyclone Hockey game, I strongly suggest you take in at least one of the next two. The following week the team will look to capture the Murdoch Cup at the 2009 National Championship.

So what is this title compared to the national championship? I am confused on that.

Well, to answer your question, the CSCHL (Central States Collegiate Hockey League) is the Cyclones' conference. Today was the final of the conference tournament, which the Cyclones unfortunately lost.

Ohio came back from two goals down to beat Iowa State 4-3 in an outstanding game.

The National Championship is in two weeks in Cleveland. The Cyclones play West Chester University in the first round. Despite the loss today, I think the Cyclones are poised to make a run for the Murdoch Cup (national championship trophy which is named after our coach). They have some great speed, skill and size. I think they'll be tough to beat in Cleveland.

It was great to see them all again. It's a really fun team to watch. Whoever is still in Ames should check them out next weekend!

So, I've heard that the athletic department partially funds the hockey club, is that true and how/is the athletic department involved with Cyclone hockey.

Yet they walk around all cocky as if they were D-1 athletes..

One thing that wasn't mentioned was Iowa State was missing their two All-Star defensemen (Brent Cornelius and Adam Mueller) as well as one of their leaders up front (Pete Majkozak) during the CSCHL tourney. Those three (along with a number of other CSCHL players) were representing the United States in the World University Games in Harbin, China. They won three of their five games over the course of the tournament for a seventh-place finish, the best finish in the five years the U.S. has competed.

At any rate, with those three back Iowa State is going to be a very dangerous team in the tournament. As strong as they've been in the past, I think this has been their best shot at going the distance in the five or six years I have followed them. They'll definitely be hungry for some revenge against West Chester, the team that knocked Iowa State out of the national tournament two seasons ago.

I'm amazed that they are using the new ISU Athletics logos on all of their stuff with no (public) repercussions. That was a sore point for a long time with the previous 'whirlybird' logo set.

They should be able to, even as a club sport they represent the university and the I State logo represents the university.

The I-State logo set was created by, and specifically represents, the Athletic Department.

The university policy notes, in part:

"Student Organizations can use university trademarks (Iowa State words, symbols and graphics) on their web sites only if those web sites are in the iastate.edu domain. Web sites with "iastate.edu" in their URL meet this qualification. The Organization's web site must contain the officially registered name of the Organization as specified in Section 5.A. Use of the University's trademarks is not allowed on Organization websites hosted outside the university. In addition, registering a domain name that uses Iowa State trademarks (for example, iowastatehikers.com or cyclonegourmets.com) is prohibited."

...and...

"ORGANIZATION DESIGN STANDARDS
Designs that use the university's Marks must be reviewed by Trademark Licensing and are subject to the design standards established by the university. Additional standards specific to Organizations' use of the marks include the following:
a. The official name of the Organization must appear in the design. At the discretion of Trademark Licensing, additional language and/or design details may be required to show how an Organization is connected to the University, including but not limited to, the requirement to use the verbiage “club” or “student chapter.”"

I don't know the current staff, but can guarantee they go through all the checks necessary through both the Trademark and Business & Finance offices. Through media and fan support, Cyclone Hockey is incredibly visible and they certainly aren't trying to hide their use of the logo. I would even venture to guess that Murdoch was asked to adopt the new logo to avoid brand erosion of the I-State identity.
