I say wrestling and women's basketball
wrestling is probably more realistic- but I can dream
Re: Iowa State Championships
Not to be a nit-picker, but where are the Iowa State NCAA Boxing Championship Banners that once hung in Hilton Coliseum?
Although it is no longer an NCAA sport, aren't we losing a bit of history by ignoring these NCAA Champions?
Re: Iowa State Championships
Whatever happened to our cross country program? We used to be national powerhouses

I know, it is next to impossible to find info on former sports.
Re: Iowa State Championships
So are we better than EIU no way that have more titles than that!
They have a few wrestling titles but nothing like that list!!
Re: Iowa State Championships
The men's gymnastics team won the National Championships in 1971. 1973 and 1974. I remember.....I was a student at ISU then, and working at Hilton Coliseum. They also won at least 10 Big 8 Conference Team Championships, not sure of the years. They had a great coach back then, Ed Gagnier. He even wrote a book on gymnastics.
Re: Iowa State Championships
This was a pretty damn good athletic department in the 70s. Almost every sport had success except basketball. Even football was rollin!

You're right. ISU finally got to some bowl games in the 70's. Even Men's basketball was on the right path. Hard to say what might have happened there if Maury John had not taken ill at the start of the 73/74 season. I think he only coached like 4 or 5 games that year. Then we were stuck with several years of Ken Trickey and Lynn Nance until Johnny came along. I don't remember how strong the women's teams were then. They did not compete in Hilton. Back then it was Men's basketball and gymnastics, wrestling and hockey.

I have those, what I don't have is the Men's gymnastics conference championships.

You do realize that the first list is conference. I have no clue how many conference titles EIU has, but I'm guessing it is more than you think.
Re: Iowa State Championships
According to wikipiedia, the hawks have around 103 Big10 titles, of course 32 of those were wrestling and that doesn't take into account any MVC titles they may have picked up before the Big10. For national titles, the hawks supposedly have 24 (however, one of them is debatable). Of our 20, 7 of them are non-NCAA, however, I feel they are just as legit since the NCAA didn't have a national title in that event at the time and actually took over the organization that gave us our title.
