Re: If you could add one sport
Hockey by far. Iowa is surprisingly a hockey hotbed with a number of junior and high school teams. That advantage in recruiting could springboard a fledgling program to some success within just a couple years.
The old photos of Hilton being used for hockey are really amazing, and I think it would be a perfect venue. With the addition of the basketball practice facility it should free up some more availability at Hilton for ice conversion for games, while the hockey team can use the Ames/ISU Ice Arena for their practices. Otherwise a facility like Miami (OH) could be built for a hockey team -- it's a beautiful little facility that seats 3200.

Re: If you could add one sport
Unfortunately, as nice as it would be to add things, every dollar spent on another sport would be better spent on football or basketball.

Re: If you could add one sport
Hockey in Hilton wouldn't happen. It'd be too expensive.
Don't confuse hope for a plan. -
Re: If you could add one sport
I was just looking at attendance for hockey at surrounding schools (Minnesota, Wisconsin Michigan, Dakota's, etc), average for those were over 6,000 and a few averaged over 10,000.

Depends on what you classify as a sport.

The armory idea is a great one never thought of that. But as said before, for us to have an NCAA hockey program a bigger arena has to be built. The Ames ice arena is not big enough for their standards. This is a great idea and if the program is even half good it would pay for itself.
And for those that say we would get beat bad by the UMD's of the world, i beg to differ. both schools use former junior hockey players, while the UMD players played in the USHL and Canadian Major junior hockey leagues ISU has a few that played in the USHL but mainly from the NAHL which isnt quite as good but they are still very good players.
NHL teams need to be added to the favorite teams section. -

Hockey. Hockey. Hockey. Hockey. Hockey.
I'm no expert, but would it be that hard to build a "permanent" ice sheet, and put the basketball court over top of it? What does WFA do for this? I think it would be a great "niche" for ISU, basically expounding on the success of our club program.

Baseball...easy answer. It's actually embarrassing being one of two Big XII schools without a team.

Plus having both a mens & womens soccer program helps leverage the cost of supporting quality facilities. They have been saying that for 25 years and yet it still is not close to mainstream in the country. Sure a few kids play but most still stick with FB, Track, and Baseball.

Hockey by far. I would be a lifetime season ticket holder.
It would be sweet to be the only Big 12 school with NCAA hockey, giving us something of a unique identity.
