Re: Cy will NOT be making a repeat at Capital One
Unless it's changed in the last year or two, USBank and Iowa State had a massive agreement related to ISU Cards (ID). USBank paid a hefty sum to link the ISU Card to a bank account. As part of the agreement they are allowed to advertise during new student orientation, and would pack Beardshear with workers to get students to sign up while they waited in line to get ID.
USBank used to own the ATMs on campus as well, but this changed three or four years ago (now owned by the Greater Iowa Credit Union).

We could still get him into the write-in competition!

I doubt ISU simply uses USB for basic checking......
Usually if you are a business, in this case a good sized business, you try to keep your banker happy, keep the money flowing. Again, I doubt that ISU gets more from USB than just a checking service. And in this day and age, you'd want to keep that bank happy as bank relationships that supply large amounts of capital to you are not as easy as just a year ago.

That would be because Capital One isn't a commercial bank, they don't have bank branches. They basically do credit cards, so the explanation, if this whole thing isn't just sarcastic, doesn't make sense.
Re: Cy will NOT be making a repeat at Capital One
No big deal. I doubt Capital One would want Cy in there again anyway. They like people coming to their website and probably want a new group of fans hitting it every day. Cyclone fans spent plenty of time there last year.

How do you handcuff a tree? They have no arms!

It's just like hanging up Christmas lights, just make sure to cuff every branch.

As most of you know Cy won the 2009 competition with an outstanding help from the great fans of ISU. But the Athletic Department is saying no to the squad's request to make a repeat run (making Cy the first mascot to go back to back if he would win)
The athletic department's reasoning is that they do all of thier banking with US Bank and thinks that it looks bad to be participating in a Capital One sponsored competition.
This information is 100% confirmed. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but i suppose this is best so it isnt a shock to anyone when the announcement comes from Capital One that Cy will not be a returning member
Don't want to derail the thread, but I just want you to know exactly how much restraint it took for me not to edit your post and change your words to say "Sorry to be the beaver of bad news." For some reason, that idea really appealed to me, and I could hardly control my own laughter at the thought of it. Fortunately, my better judgement prevailed, and I held myself back.
However, it did inspire me to create a Cyclone Fanatic award that goes to any person who breaks a bad news story about Iowa State.
So without further ado, I bestow upon you, Cyman1189, the first honorary Cyclone Fanatic, "Beaver of Bad News" Award. Congratulations! I know we will give out many, many more.

Ok, continue with the thread.

This is rather stupid. The AD pumped the contest as much as anyone, as I recall. Didn't most of us get emails reminding us to vote and such?
I'm guessing US Bank is our financier for many of the capital projects?

I agree it does sound stupid.
Pollard was super proud of it, and the school promoted it a ton. It excited the fan base, and was an overal win for everyone. I can't imagine that we would choose not to participate again unless there was pressure coming from somewhere. That's the only thing that make logical sense.
