Johnny Orr defined the word "colorful". I would also throw in a former assistant football coach named King Block who, after he left coaching, opened up a western store in downtown Ames called King Block's Coral. He was a very funny guy.
Crutchfield might be up there somewhere? Vroman? Sam Hill? Lafester Rhodes? Tracy Henderson? Braswell? Espinoza?
Maybe a character in the worst way possible...I've heard from a few different sources, all reliable, that he is one of the biggest a**sholes ever to walk the face of the earth, much less the ISU campus.
I would have to go with Chris Taylor. I mean, come on....when he first came to campus, they took him to the meal lab to get him weighed (so the legend goes). When he was about to pin an opponent at home........he would look to the cheerleaders around the edge of the mat, and they would give him the thumbs down before he pinned. His opponents could not even lift one of his legs if they got in on a single-leg. They would look at the ref who would just shrug, while trying to hold back his laughter no doubt.
"Most Colorful" I'd have to say Johnny Orr gets my vote.
I do have a Chris Taylor memory though. When I was a kid my Dad took me to see Cyclone wrestling. We bought a program on the way in and at some point before the meet was over I worked up enough nerve to go down and ask Chris for an autograph. He politely said yes, and I'll never forget that when he took the pen from me to sign the program the pen literally disappeared due to his hand being so huge. I still have that program packed away in a box somewhere.
Justus Thigpen would have to have my vote. I remember seeing him in a fur coat at one point. The guy liked to dress to impress. He wore the diamond earrings before they were in style. Terry Woods was also a very colorful personality.
