When I heard it from one huge wrestling supporter that Pollard would not put more money into the wrestling program I took it as just frustration talking. Then I hear it from another prominent supporter, then I begin to wonder. When I hear it from a third big supporter of wrestling then it makes me think there must be some substance to the info. These people who I visited with are not just your average joes, these are ISU national champions that are very close to the program.
From what I've heard, Cael was one of 3 coaches at ISU that had an open door to Pollard's office to basically request whatever was needed and Pollard would work his tail off to get it. The other two being Fennelly and Christy Johnson.
That doesn't necessarily rule out your scenario, but I'd have a hard time seeing it.

To borrow from something I heard on TV this past week...
"An increase in the Cyclone wrestling budget can only be made possible by an increase in the annual financial support of Cyclone fans Like You!"
"Don't worry Boss...they can't do nothin' 'til they're through sparklin'..."

I don't know what happened - neither do most any of us.
And I'm very, very proud of our wrestling program. It's one of the few sports we are traditionally a power at and rarely let's us down. Never embrarasses us.
But if you're JP, with the lowest budget in the conference - how much money do you put into a program that is NOT a revenue generator? Cael had the largest salary in the sport (at least til PSU came knocking). From what I recall - they are renovating facilities. Sure, maybe he could spend more on coaches or recruiting budgets - but the well is only so deep.
BTW - my "villian" and off the wall at that (and Jon might like it) - is Nick Bell, former iowa running back. Starter for my first iowa/ISU game as a freshman. Made the field at JTS look more like a 100 yard sprint relay. Kind of an emotional scarring - if you know what I mean. 4 weeks earlier I was a hawk fan going to ISU. After that game (and their fans) - pretty easy to dislike them from there on. So perhaps I should actually be thanking Mr. Bell.
Shaggy (B12 N titles)
Refs against FSU
Refs against Independence Bowl
Drew Tate (his all there is in Iowa is corn and Iowa Football during the Alamo Bowl Media Conference)
Kirk (arrogant D-BAG)
Running an Option on the last play of the game (CU WTF!!! who calls that??)
Gene Chizik (Nuff said)
*****Fearless Leader of the 2012 HawkeyeNation Trolling Invasion*****
Anyone who calls a former player who was doing the best the can on every play a villain should be ashamed of themselves. I would call the thousands of middle class Central Iowa Cyclone fans that fail to attend ISU games on a regular basis the biggest villians of them all.
