Theories in hiring coaches
I'm curious.....what do some of you think we should look for in hiring a basketball coach for ISU? I'm not saying to replace McDermott...he's not going anywhere and there are other places to argue that....no need to name replacements since it won't happen. But what should we look for, realistically, in a coaching candidate....what type of person should an ISU basketball program look for or be able to hire?

Re: Theories in hiring coaches
I would like to see someone that's not stepping up to Big12 ball. It'd be nice to land someone that had a clue what it takes.
Re: Theories in hiring coaches
Who could get that has already been here though?
Re: Theories in hiring coaches
I have been told it helps to hire coaches that can recruit and win.
Re: Theories in hiring coaches
Look at the current winning coaches like Roy Smith and Bill Self and similar. They look controlled most of the time, but they have real fire inside. They can bring the heat at the end of the game.
Re: Theories in hiring coaches
Lon Kruger, someone who has won at multiple schools and he is doing it again at UNLV.

That would be a logical choice that we could get. He's been there, done that at this level.

That'd be really hard for us. Before we hired McDermott, I was supporting the hiring of Mark Turgeon, who was an attainable hire and not much different in terms of results than McDermott. However, I also think that sometimes you're better off getting a low-major coach with more success.
Re: Theories in hiring coaches
You need to hire someone that has major conference experience, even if that came as an assistant coach or a player. Last year, I looked up the coaching experience of the Big 12 and Big Ten coaches, and nearly all of them had coached as an assistant at major conference school.
McDermott didn't have that major conference experience either as a coach or a player, and it was/is painfully obvious.

Yes. May not make me popular but let's give TF a chance to rehabilitate his career. Eddie Sutton got his name on the court at OSU despite some shady behavior. Maybe Tim would come back to Ames.
Dedric Willoughby, Shawn Bankhead, Kelvin Cato, Kenny Pratt, JC Holloway. One of my all time favorite ISU teams.

We're going to find out in a few years.
I think we need somebody who has the ability to "steal" some big time recruits while relying more on finding diamonds in the rough and hard nosed tough basketball players. We are never going to have the most talent so we need a coach who can motivate his players and also find the players to compete with teams better than us. Obviously we need a guy who knows his basketball and won't falter in almost every close game.

Hire someone with some sort of attitude and passion.Like Johnny, Tim and Larry. They were all intense and expected to win and were not afraid to hurt anyone's feelings. Now our coach just sits back and takes it. If everyone told the other 3 guys that they should be fired I bet Larry, Johnny and Tim would all let us know what they were feeling. McDermott is lame and boring to listen to, watch coach and his teams don't win. Get someone that cares!
Re: Theories in hiring coaches
I want a coach that plays the way players want to play - ala up tempo, fast paced, run and gun. This slow it down, ball control is okay if you are winning...but if we are going to lose, lets make it more entertaining!
