ISU a football or basketball school?
Are we becoming a football school? Despite all the success that ISU had early in the last decade, football had more post season appearances between 2000 and 2009. What are we?
Yes I know I left WBB off and I did so intentionally.

1976-1978 ISU = football school
1979-1993 ISU = neither

2000-2001 ISU = football AND basketball school. Good times.
2002-2005 ISU = football school
2006-present ISU = neither. Thanks, Jamie!

You are what bring in the most money, therefore at ISU it is football. Not many schools can claim to be a Basketball school.
NHL teams need to be added to the favorite teams section. -

Re: ISU a football or basketball school?
I'm still trying to figure out why anyone says we were a basketball school. Sure, our football team was miserable for years, but it's not like we had championship winning BBall teams until late 90s early '00s. Getting in the tournament was never a guarantee and that should be the first mark of a BBall school. I wouldn't even say you have to win championships to be a basketball school, but when I was at ISU, it was a big deal to make the NCAA tournament. IF that's the case, then we were never moer a BBall school than football school.
Now looking at it from a fans perspective, yeah, BBall was probably more popular in the late 80s through early '00s, and Hilton was a big deal in those days, but all in all, I don't think a ton of teams got overly scared, on a yearly basis, that ISU was coming to town. All in all, football is where the big money is at. We need it to succeed.

Re: ISU a football or basketball school?
I think we are becoming more of a football school than we've been. I don't think of it in terms of wins and losses as much as which sport is more popular with the fan base, which I guess is tied to wins and losses. If I had to guess I would say basketball is more popular with the students, with the rest of the fan base fairly even.
Maybe that should be a poll question. I'll start one.

Although never in the same sentence as programs like KU and UCLA, from the hiring of Johnny Orr to March of 2006 this universities claim to fame has been basketball. Now it's hard to tell.

Re: ISU a football or basketball school?
ISU has at least won the Conference Championship in basketball in the last 50 years.
In football they have never been close to being one of the best teams in the Conference.

Re: ISU a football or basketball school?
Easy question. We are neither. You need to ask fans of different teams about ISU to get a true answer. I'd bet all my credits on neither. Our future is brighter in football, no doubt.

Yes I know I left WBB off and I did so intentionally. Iowa State: The drinking school with the football problem.

Re: ISU a football or basketball school?
In the past 30 years we have had 7 winning conference seasons in basketball and 2 in football. From that standpoint neither, although basketball has been better.
