IOWA STATE ATHLETICS TO MAKE DONATION TO MUSIC DEPARTMENT

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State Athletics Department is providing $125,000 from its Insight Bowl receipts to the institution’s Department of Music to help fund new uniforms for the ISU Cyclone Football “Varsity” Marching Band.

Officials from the marching band and athletics department decided to transport the 350 musicians and their staff to the bowl game via bus and the savings would be applied towards the cost of new uniforms.

Money well spent. Those uniforms are at least 10 years old and falling apart. Not to mention, they have all of the old logos and colors. The band definitely adds a lot to the games and sacrificed a lot by taking charter buses 30+ hours straight down to Tempe and back with no overnight stays in a hotel. I say its fair to give them the difference they saved by taking buses instead of chartering a plane (or two).

They will, in exchange for the donation the athletic department is getting input on and final approval of the design.

That's interesting. Have they not been involved in the past? That would explain some of the old uniforms we pulled out of storage when we did that display.

On a side note: The first thing that I thought of when I saw the title line was that the athletic dept was going to try to bribe Harrison Barnes' mother!

I'm not sure about the past, but I would guess that it's kind of a sensitive area after the logo change and traditional colors. Remember the AnM game the year after the color change where the dance team wore uniforms that looked like AnM instead of ISU? Noticed that those haven't reappeared?

Isn't as easy to replace a color blunder for marching band unis as it is for the dance team. Even with the HUGE amount of help that the Athletic department is giving to get the uniforms replaced it will still probably cost about $100K more in fund raising to get it done.

Very nice! Im curious what the new uniform design will end up look like. I personally would like a more 'modern' marching band look, but just the fact that theyre finally close to getting new uniforms is a great thing.

That's awesome, maybe now they can get uniforms with buttons that don't pop off.

I hadn't heard about the band taking buses, that sucks. When I went to the 2000 Insight Bowl we flew and stayed the night in a hotel. I can't imagine a 15 hour bus ride, marching, then back on the bus. My god that must have stunk.

15 hour? double that.
