I don't listen to DSM radio that much, but I have always felt that one of ISU's greatest problems was PR and media coverage. I live in the Waterloo-Cedar Falls area and it would be hard to know that ISU exists from the coverage we get locally. The girls sweet 16 was buried behind UNI lesbians tidley-winks match with Upper NE Missouri State Teachers College in the local media. JP really needs to do whatever is necessary to get broader state media support. It is necessary to get HS kids interested in our programs if we are ever going the improve in-state recruiting and achieve a broader fan base.
You mean to say DSM has sports talk radio? What little I have heard is meaningless drival. And as to getting more information across the state, you can send out press releases all day but if the paper or radio or TV station does not care about ISU nothing will happen. I lived for a time in eastern Iowa and all they care about are the hawks. I had to email KCCI about Alison Lacey making honorable mention all american and their response was "we did not get a press release from the universiity prior to the 6 PM sports", but you could find the story other places. So you see if they do not want to push ISU they will not no matter what we do.
Keeler is the worst . . but some of these radio hosts reflect the same formula: generate discussion by focusing on a fault or problem with the athletic program (plug in Iowa or ISU).
ISU is a much safer target to attack because our fans and administration LOVE to roll over and take it like the wimps we are. I have been saying for years that ISU should stand up to these air wave bullies and Keeler by CUTTING them off from ANY ISU information.
In short, I support Pollard 100 percent in his contempt for these morons and commend him for avoiding their radio "sports" shows. Side bar: The real problem for ISU is in our high schools . . . our kids are socialized to support Iowa versus ISU. What is really sad . . is how many ISU fans simply roll over or agree with all the put downs because "we are ISU and deserve it." Un freaking believable.
In terms of sports . . the state of Iowa is really quite odd in the way in which it rallies behind one school (win of lose) . . at the expense of the other/s.
I listen to M&D in the morning and Marty in the afternoon.
As for Pollard, I doubt that he's on the radio much as any decent host would call him out on McDermott. Deace met with him and said as much this morning. Pollard can't say publically that making a change in MBB isn't worth the money that it would take away from FB, but that's the reality of the situation.
Pollard acts with class and dignity and these talk radio guys are schlock and awe. What do you expect to happen?
I think JP does need DSM Sports Talk Radio. It is a free media stream for him to communicate with the Cyclone fan base and raise dollars! Even if he personally dislikes any of the sports talk personalities he needs to swallow his pride, put it aside, and agree to interviews.
