And then just think about the fact that they have just as much say on how we run this country as you do. Sobering, isn't it?

Re: More Iowa State Ignorance
CapitalCityGuy, first off, there's nothing great about Indiana. Never said there is. Personally, I hate it. It's like Iowa, but with more rude people with less common sense.
That being said, just because you feel people from the midwest should know about the great state of Iowa doesn't mean they're stupid for not (though the potato thing is a bit extreme). Personally, if they never have been to Iowa, don't plan on going to Iowa or have any family or friends in Iowa, why do they need to give a crap about Iowa? What does it have to offer them? For whatever reason, Iowans have a complex about other states not knowing about them when, in reality, most people in other states have no reason to know anything about Iowa.
As for Indiana being in the midwest, it only is in the sense of the term. People here are NOT midwesterners. And most of the state us even in the freaking eastern time zone.

I think everyone (citizens of this nation) should have at least general knowledge about every state in the union. I know I do. I have never stepped foot in over half of our 50 states, but I still know where they are located, etc. There are a lot of things that I don't give a crap about, but I still think everyone should know about. Do they not offer 8th grade geography outside of Iowa? I'm on twitter @mookjnsn ... me, not her. -

Do they not offer 8th grade geography outside of Iowa? Many years ago I live in Minnesota and one of my roommates was from California. He was thinking of driving to Washington D.C. His first question was,
"How far of a drive is it?"
"Maybe 20 hours."
"Really? Is it East or West of here?"

I can't tell if this was posted tongue in cheek or erroneously...

I think that you need to realize that, in general, Iowans tend to care a little more than others around the country. Just because you took the time to learn a little about each state doesn't mean the rest of the country cares to. Does that make it right? In my view, no. Hell, I'm a supporter in requiring that you have a working knowledge of at least two foreign languages. On the same note, though, I couldn't confidently tell you Rhode Island's main export. I'd veture to guess it's ocean related, but I'm not sure. Does that make me ignorant?

On the academic front however, at every school I went to visit to decide on a PhD program, the other prospectives were all in awe of the fact that I went to ISU for Chemical Engineering.

Re: More Iowa State Ignorance
To me it's not a school thing or an athletic thing, it's just a general knowledge thing. I can't tell you how many times I had people mention potatoes and Iowa when I lived in Michigan. I don't expect people to know teams or schools or sports, that's being a sports snob IMO. I DO EXPECT THAT PEOPLE KNOW THE STATES IN THE COUNTRY THEY LIVE! It's not like I'm asking people to know the provinces of Canada or the states and territories of Australia.

I once had a philosophy prof who felt that you could gain a pretty solid education if you took just geography and economics. I believe he meant both physical and cultural geography. I wonder if geography is taught many places in primary or secondary schools these days.

Re: More Iowa State Ignorance
so u talked to someone that doesn't know much about iowa state, so u had to post to laugh at him...wow
considering iowa state isn't widely known, nor a majority of the country gives a **** about college sports, you shouldn't be bashing anyone because they dont know much about iowa state

Anyone who is a Big 12 fan (or fan of any conference) and isn't familiar with at least the name and location of all member schools is an idiot.
