More Iowa State Ignorance

So I'm currently vacationing in Branson with the family and this morning we left our condo and I am sporting an ISU shirt. While waiting for the elevator, a guy looks at my shirt and the conversation goes as follows:

Him: Iowa State huh...they had a pretty good basketball team last year didn't they?

Me: Not really...hoping this year turns out better

Him: Iowa State should join the Big 12. We could really use another team or two since Colorado and Nebraska left.

Me: Iowa State IS in the Big 12.

Him: Really? I must be confused.

Me: I think so...what school do you root for?

Him: Well I am a Michigan State guy, but both my sons go to Missouri.

I pretty much rolled my eyes and left. The kicker was him telling me ISU should join the Big 12...LOL. Unbelievable.

He isn't much of an MSU fan if he doesn't remember ISU from the Big XII in the 2000 elite eight game...

He probably also thinks the big 10 is a good football conference. All you can do is be nice to them and then laugh when they're gone. Sounds like you handled the situation about right.

Even though he was an MSU grad, it sounded like he rooted for Mizzou because his sons went there and he referred to the Big 12 as "we" when he said ISU should join.

I would not call that "Iowa State" ignorance as much as I would call it "garden variety" ignorance. Was the gentleman brathing through his mouth, as well?

When ISU played Baylor in football in Waco in 2008, my wife and I stopped by our bank on our way out, both wearing our ISU shirts.

A gentleman in line ahead of us was wearing a sleeveless camo shirt, a bright orange hunting hat, and a Bluetooth earpiece, and also had a fine mullet.

He sees my ISU shirt and asks "Iowa State fans? Who are they playing?"

Me: Baylor.

Him: Baylor, huh? Should be a good game. *snickers*

After an awkward pause, he says, "I went to Iowa once. Where was that? Boise? Yeah, it was Boise."

I think this is more sad than the OP. Plus, A&M is a very good school, how they could be this ignorant is beyond me. I could tell someone all the teams in EVERY BCS conference if asked, easily.

One reason is the way the Fox affiliate down here does the Big XII preview shows - the schedule only had the south teams. Kinda stupid.

The guy was not a hillbilly or anything...he was dressed nicely and I would say he was fairly "well to do".

No, not jokingly either.

Its not just A&M people either. I have a lot of family in Texas, and we were down there recently visiting. Most of the people we saw, including some family members are huge Longhorn fans, and most of them had no clue that ISU was in the Big XII. In all honesty down there its like the Big XII north does not exist beyond Nebraska, KU and Mizzou...and even that's stretching it.

That's still no excuse for the fact that we play them every year in basketball and 2 of 4 years in football. They should know we are in the same conference regardless of media bias...ridiculous.

If we want to join the big XII, we're probably gonna have to run it by Texas first!
