Most of my opinion on that stems from talking with people that gave presentations at the union whose names I've forgotten. One was a lady that spent quite a bit of time in Iraq. The other was a member of CENTCOM.How do you know

Now there is plenty of Al-Queda in Iraq. They didn't have much of a presence there before the war. The only WMD's Iraq had were the ones we gave them in the 80's. I can't necessarily defend all the people that voted for the war at the time, but to be fair, few people outside the administration were privy to all of the intelligence. For about the 5th time, our intelligence showed Iraq had weapons of mass destruction and almost NO ONE disagreed! And I'm pretty safe in saying that there are just a few Al-Queda factions in Iraq...and they did attack us.
Thanks. You are clearly qualified to speak as to where I get my information from. Where do you get yours from?He watches the news.

I find it funny no one mentions Saudi Arabia, where just about all of the hijackers came from and where Sunni fundamentalism is at its highest. Iran also had absolutely nothing to do with 9/11.

It's so easy to throw out phrases like "war for oil", "3,000 lives lost", "underprotected troops"...everyone has heard that because that's what is on the news...
Where is the "women now have civil rights", "we have built a record number of schools", etc. coverage?
There will always be people that are against a war. Those people generally are not, nor were they ever willing to fight for our country. They were only willing to tell our country what we should be doing from the safety of the sidewalk infront of "install military base or federal building here". They were NEVER EVER willing to stand a post, Go on a raid, Set up an ambush, Patrole a hot zone, or land in a hot LZ. They were only willing to tell us how wrong we are for doing it. Remember 09/11. Well I also remember the USS Cole (1 buddy on the ship). I remember Beruit in 83 (several friends that were in Beruit). For the record, yes I am a Marine. I have been there and done that. Before Rowanda was a Movie. Myself and a bunch of my buddies were there in 94. Before Iraq we were fighting a silent war in Bosnia.
The moral of my story. The press only let's you know about certain wars they want to make there money off of. The rest of it is just some grunt getting it done the hard way.
You're right, we do always dwell on the negatives and never seem to celebrate the posatives. That isn't however any excuse to ingore the negatives. At you job, for instance, you probebly do much more problem solving than sitting around thinking about all the things your company has achieved over the last 50 years.
I don't think this is what your are suggesting, but I've heard it from others, and it scares me.
I will agree that Biden's plan has more going for it than some that I have seen, but everything looks great on paper. The timetable (2008) is also very suspect. In a perfect world I suppose. The division of Iraq on ethnic lines does not seem like a bad idea, but I also don't know how many Sunni shrines would be in Shia areas, or vice versa. Now that we are in the quagmire in Iraq I think our options are a lot more limited. I personally like Senator Biden's plan about as well as anything.
Plan For Iraq
Otherwise though, I think it would be useful to spend much of that money on buying friends and intelligence. Information is our best weapon at this point. We also need to demonstrate as a country that we are likeable. Whether we like it or not, people will hate us because of our wealth. We have less than 10% of the world's population and over 50% of its wealth. We can afford to be a little generous. Just look at how well it works for Chavez in Venezuela. When you buy people things they like you.
I loved Reagan...one of the greatest of all time...his stature will continue to grow as his presidency is more thoroughly understood in retrospect and within the context of what has followed him (and will follow him). Reagan was a true conservative!
1. I point him out as someone who has succeeded in getting a lot of the common man to like him by basically buying them.Holding up Chavez as a shining example is pretty rich though. Almost like that other thread where you started out with "Marx had it mostly right...". Hand outs don't make people like you. It makes people expect more handouts.
China's need for oil is the reason nothing is getting done about Darfur.China will shortly be wagging the oil "dog" (if they aren't already), just like they are is wagging the "natural resources" dog for items like copper and steel.

We could help solve a portion of our domestic oil problem by drilling in Alaska. However, that would (and has) open a whole different can of worms...
