Thanks & Go Cyclones! If you are a freshman, you can play in exhibitions without ruining your redshirt status. If you are not a freshman, once you play you can no longer redshirt. Transfers can't play.

I'm not losing any sleep over it, either way. Fans got hung up on Staiger's eligibility, waited a year for the patience to pay off, waited another year for him to "become effective," he had one awesome game, then bolted.
I'm not saying any of that will happen in this case. I just don't want to obsess over it.

Thanks & Go Cyclones! Royce White is NOT eligible to play in any games this year unless granted a waiver by the NCAA. How is this not known by everyone by now?

I'm not saying any of that will happen in this case. I just don't want to obsess over it. The NCAA is a big, bloated, corrupt, bureaucracy. (Kinda like our government)
They dont do anything quickly or efficiently. Not unless there is some sort of monetary incentive for them. And even then, I wouldnt hold my breath.......

Transfers can't play. Being a freshman doesn't have anything to do with it, and for that matter neither does redshirting. You have 2 types of players, eligible and ineligible. Any eligible player can play at any time. An ineligible player is not allowed to ever play. By default if you transfer you are ineligible for one year (only Football and Basketball - other sports don't do this if you are released from your scholoarship). The NCAA can give you a waiver and make you eligible immediately.
At the end of the year, if you did not play in any game (other than exhibitions) you can use it as a redshirt year and it does not count against your 4 years of eligibility (it does start the 5 years to play 4 clock). The key is that redshirt status is not declared at the beginning of the year, it is essentially retroactive at the end of the season. It doesn't matter if you are a freshman or not. DG could play tonight, take the rest of the year off and come back again next year.

Freshmen are the only players who can play in exhibitions and still be eligible for a non-medical redshirt.

That seems to be the litmus test to this argument.

That seems to be the litmus test to this argument. That's a good question. I tried searching the NCAA site, which is a mess of bad links and expired PDFs. I think it's basically a moot point, though, because how often do you bring a JuCo kid in to red-shirt him? I would assume that they are treated like a freshman during their first exhibition games with the new team, but I could be wrong. It wouldn't be too hard to figure out by looking at exhibition box scores, but I can't recall any cases of a JuCo coming in and taking a (non-medical) redshirt for their first season on campus.
