I love this team. They play inspired, confident basketball. Definitely exceeding expectations. The thing to remember is, we are as thin as a sheet of paper. We are one key injury away from disaster.

I will reserve judgment on this group for the Big 12 season. Conference teams are not going to let us run up and down the floor like maniacs so we have to see how we react to that. Plus our front line and depth is a big problem and conference teams will exploit that more.

At worst we should have 3 losses going into conference play. And it isn't crazy to think we could be undefeated, but still, that wouldn't tell me that much.

All that said, I like the schedule, we don't need to playing murders row in the pre-conference schedule. We get plenty SOS points in conference. As Johnny Orr said. "We are ganna go get some dogs and bring em in here and drill em! We are ganna play some teams you never heard of man!" And I think that is a good philosophy right for right now.

We need a schedule that will build confidence and that's what we've gotten so far. It will be interesting to see how the team handles losses when they start to come.

keep in mind in Orr's last year he lost Meyer to injury. The conference had Big men like Big Country and we had nothing in the middle to deal with that.

How's this for a downer....our last coach started 6-0...with a "decent" win againt Minny - at Minny. Only to take the bus up to UNI and get beat by Jake and the boys.

I see a similar pattern forming....UNI will be the true test.

Mac was not a great fit at ISU - but he is far from a terrible coach. Everyone was just at giddy with Taylor, Dunson and some freshman named Wesley Johnson after starting 6-0 in Mac's first year.

At a major school in a major conference...he did everything godawful.

mis-handled players/personalities.

did not tailor his system to players

recruited terribly.

I don't care how swell the fella is.

He is one of the worst employees the department has ever had.

Christmas came early last spring when we were able to unload his worthless butt onto Creighton.

The difference for me is when we were 6-0 last year I thought "Yeah we're 6-0 but we don't look that good", and it didn't look like anybody was having fun. Compare that to this year where we actually have guys playing hard, having fun, and showing flashes of being a good TEAM. Add in the potential for the next few seasons and recruiting classes CFH can put together and it's just a totally different feeling. That said, our record this season probably won't be that much different from last season's, and we're going to take some poundings inevitably, but it just "feels" different.

Mac recruited OK while at ISU. Taylor, Wes Johnson, Brakins are all in or played in the NBA. Gilstrap will make some money somewhere. DG is playing good, same with Scottie and JVB is playing well.

Did MAC have misses...sure, well documented.

Did his system not work....you can yes, because of the record. But you can "win" with his philosophy. Many coaches use it...Bo Ryan comes to mind

I still feel he did some nice things...expecially defensively....I always thought Mac did a nice job of taking away the other teams strength and making others beat us - which normally happened.

Mac's best coaching years were year 1 and 3. Year 4 had all the promise in the world...but JVB's injury was killer for that team.

I was just going to read the schedules on cyclones.com. You'll find the scores there for every game we've ever played.

Thanks for doing this. It puts in in perspective.

Thinking of something here: Since Johnny's last year and Floyd's first year have a certain class of players with a certain guy named Fred Hoiberg on them, we can see that Fred's teams hit 90+ 15 times in his last two years at ISU.

Three games out of 5 as a coach so far. Can we say it's a fair assumption that Fred likes to run and score?

I'll dispute the Mac philosophy working comment.
It was great for an at-that-time dead UNI program. Playing in the big-leagues? No way.

Bo Ryan's and Mac's systems are different AND I'm not sure that Bo's would work in the B12 as well as the B10.
