Williams: Panthers slow the Cyclones

Here's my take on tonight's game. Time to drive home. Enjoy.

Pretty much sums it up. Hoiberg said there was no offensive rhythm and that's what it boils down to. You have to give credit to UNI for their defensive effort, but the movement, passing, execution was all poor offensively. Too many misses and not enough creativity on the offensive end.

I put lack of rebounding, lack of intensity and inability to control the pace/tempo of the game above poor shooting as the reasons we lost. The rebounding was especially poor. I don't know why we didn't attack the offensive glass a lot harder, it isn't like UNI was going to run the other way on us. Maybe the lack of offensive flow left people out of position for offensive rebounds.

I thought Railey played really well in his 8 minutes. Godfrey looked completely lost.

Shooting percentages were actually very similar...

UNI
FG%: 16-49 32.7%
3P%: 8-25 32.0%
FT%: 20-23 87.0%

ISU
FG%: 18-54 33.3%
3P%: 6-20 30.0%
FT%: 12-16 75.0%

The bolded part was a big difference in the score tonight. However, I'm not blaming it all on that because ISU allowed UNI to control the tempo. It was about the most boring close game you could watch.

Ya you would think that coach could help the guys on this. He was what 90+% in his career. Ejim needs to be able to hit his free throws, it would make him complete.

Actually, shooting 75% as a team from the charity stripe as a team isn't bad. Give UNI credit, they shot an amazing percentage as a team. I was more concerned about the rebounding numbers than the FT%. The issue with the FT's was just that they got to shoot so many.

If the Panthers that were shooting FTs shot their average, we win (or tie, right in there).

If we show some more fire, we win.

If some of our open looks go in, we win.

That was an ugly game, but not completely disheartening. We can grow from it.

I agree that rebounding was a huge problem and will continue to be throughout. I also see free throw shooting causing us some close ones as well. All in all though a lot of people had this game as a L, we gave ourselves a shot down the strech and came up short. On to Cal. at Hilton. It is basketball and you can lose some games.

The interesting thing was when we went down by I think seven, that after a timeout we ran three sets in a row and had wide open shots and tied it up. We didn't do that again for the rest of the game.

Exactly-If you asked most college coaches they would take 75% as a team from the line in almost every game.

I was watching the game on and off as the daughter and I put up our Christmas tree so didn't even notice Phillips didn't play. Hope the academic issues Chris mentions aren't a lingering problem! Anyone have info?

A bunch of rumors but not a lot of info on Phillips right now. As of now, he is on the team but focusing on academics. Probably a good thing with finals on the horizon.

The FG% is what is alarming last night. To only shoot 33-34% for the game is a big indicator of how important our transition game is. 30% from 3 won't get it done for us moost nights, but when you only shoot 37-38% from 2 in a game, we have no shot. We missed a lot of opportunities in the half court set to really show UNI that we could play with them in a knock down, slow down game. I also didn't think guys ran their transition lanes well. Several times it looked like guys were running on top of each other making it easy for one guy to guard two.

I also noticed quite a few rushed shots in transition. SC stopped at the free throw line...semi runner style when the basket was free, DG forced some ugly quick shots, and that airball by someone in the first half. I think the game frustrated many of the players.
