You can't use 1 year as your basis. How many tournament games has UNI won and compare that with Kansas. And also, most of our "top recruits" are sitting out and didnt play when we lost to UNI.

When did McDermott ever say that about him? I recall Coach Mac saying he wanted him to stay. I believe Wes Eikmeier along with the other defectors left and gave various reasons for leaving to take "the high road". Most of those players didn't see a future with Coach Mac, right or wrong. My point is in all of this is simple. How can we assess what a kid like Wes Eikmeier could have done here in just one year? I recall he played his first 2 games here and scored 9 points and 15 points, then got sick and never recovered. Not many freshman come right in and compete at any level. ISU wasn't the only Big 12 school that wanted him. Neb and Mizzou wanted him.

Well, I guess that was our first mistake... we should never want a player that lowly Nebraska wants.

Mizzou seems to be doing ok. I trust Coach Anderson's player assessment. He seems to get players that few want and develops them within his style and program. Players get better in his program. He isn't getting the big name recruits.

Once Eikmeir was compared to Hornacek, this thread should have immediately closed.

IMO, Wes was a good recruit. McD's mistake was not in recruiting him, it was in not redshirting him. With a redshirt year to bulk up and recover from that illness, I think he could have been a really good supporting player for us.

    Throw in Ham.

Bluejays coach Greg McDermott touched on the toughness issue after the BYU loss, saying he didn’t think the Cougars were that much more talented than his team.
“But I’m pretty sure they are a lot tougher than we are,’’ he said.
Thursday, after numerous viewings of the BYU game tape, McDermott said his team did good things, both against the Cougars and Northwestern.
“But the negative is that several times we got punched in the mouth,’’ he said, “and we didn’t respond very well to it.

    Re: Wes Eikmeier

Wes Eikmeier is an example of a player I remember very little about, except for the name.
This sort of thing is by no means limited to the GM era, but it was never as prevalent during a four-year span.
Other examples: Cory McIntosh, Dodie Dunson, Jessan Gray, Cameron Lee, Ross Marsden, Clinton Mann, Dominique Buckley and L.A. Pomlee. I’m sure there are others I completely forgot.
Cory Johnson at least played a little bit and looked like a decent role player, although I don’t remember all that much about that, either.
The only player with current eligibility who played significant minutes, who showed progress/development and might provide a boost to this year’s team is Hamilton.

Maybe I'm remembering the wrong guy.
The guy I remember lost the ball dribbling behind his back (with the game on the line) and threw more than a few no-look passes to the band.

Who didn't throw passes to the band or the 3rd row the last few years?

I can't remember the dribbling behind the back, but I'm not doubting it.
At the same time, he was a freshman who really needed to be redshirting. I don't fault him for being out there and trying to make a play.

I'll have to vote against bringing someone in, redshirting them, and HOPING that they become a "good supporting player".

Another vote here. In basketball if they aren't anywhere near good enough to be playing and have to redshirt they probably won't be anymore than a supporting player anyway. Supporting players are easy to find in any recruiting class. Of course this isn't taking into account injuries or situations like that.
How Clinton Mann and L.A. Pomlee got scholarships at a Big 12 school I will never know. No offense to those guys but a lot of offense to McDermott and Co.

    Re: Wes Eikmeier

Came in to check up on the Clones before the Iowa game and came across this thread a few pages back. What a crack up. I have been blasted before for suggesting that people here tend to overrate ISU's players and then rip them for not living up to the unrealistic expectations, but creightonclone is at it again when he says that Wes isn't "Cyclone worthy".

Sorry CC, but Eik is better than two of the Clones current starters, DG and JVB, and most of the reserves. He would be huge coming off the bench this year. Obviously he wouldn't start over DG or JVB because of position, but is a better basketball player. He starts for CSU and is a great hustle guy, good defender, and an excellent 3pt shooter. Plays like SC, just not as good, but similar. I know you are thinking I'm an idiot because after all, CSU is no ISU. Really? They took Colorado to OT last night in Boulder and CU has a better team than ISU. If the Clones went to CSU this year they would get beat, although if CSU came to Ames the Clones would probably win. No comparison in conferences?... maybe not, but the Clones don't exactly matchup in the B12 either.

Wes would be a valuable assest to Fred this year and it is unfortunate he left. Might not be athletic enough for you and the, "program", just a good Division 1 college basketball player. Clones could use a few more of those.
