    Fred's coaching style

I loved reading DG's comments that Fred gets his point across without humiliating his players. He keeps his cool (just like he did as a player) and that rubs off on everyone.

There was zero panic last night. He got animated a few times (foul on ME under the basket late in the game when he was clearly pushed in the back on the rebound, some non-traveling calls, etc) which is great. He takes control during timeouts. He listens to his coaches (especially Lutz who works as hard as any assistant I've seen) and his players.

I know it's early, but this feels like the beginning of something pretty special. Pollard deserves a lot of credit for taking a chance. I haven't been this excited about our program since the Fizer/Tinsley years.

    Re: Fred's coaching style

Fred is well respected not only in the community as Mcdermmott was but by the players. This guy has been here and done that, his experience and demeaner make him a players coach.

Seeing Lutz standing in amongst the players makes me laugh every time. I don't know if we have an assistant over 5'2".

Is there a message there about the previous coach?

Not intentionally. I guess I don't remember any players referring to GMac as "coach Greg". But, this is not a slam on GMac at all. His style has worked in the past for him and probably will at Creighton. I just think we struck gold with Fred coming home.

    Re: Fred's coaching style

It's interesting to discuss. Fred's coaching style is NBA-like and I don't really like the NBA, but the more I watch Fred coach (and Lutz and Tyler!), the more I realize that it seems to be working. And I'm guessing they would change things if it stopped working, but right now the players are playing hard and pretty smart. They seem to come out of timeouts focused. They are diving on the floor a lot.

Scotty mentions the confidence Fred has in his players a lot in interviews. It either is something pretty important to Scotty or that's all he can think of. But it does make you think b/c Scott probably had more confidence from his former coach than a lot of the players in regards to shooting.

I do get a kick out of hte 'Coach Fred' thing from DG. Hoiberg was asked about it on one of his call in shows and apparently, DG was just calling him Fred and Hoiberg told him he might want to throw a 'coach' in there :)

I love his timeout efficiency. Instead of milking every second of it, he gets his point across and sends the guys out there. I like that he doesn't overdo it.

    I'm so confused.

(not denying I don't need to grow up...but I'm not 100% sure how it randomly got thrown in here...didn't realize the masses took vertically challenged jokes so poorly)

    Re: Fred's coaching style

Most coaches wouldn't let DG shoot as much as he does. Because Fred lets him shoot, when he has poor shooting nights, DG still brings the other part of his game to the table and doesn't let the poor shooting get to him.

Gotcha... still some hard feelings over the whole McDermott thing on both sides. I'm just happy everything seemed to work out for everyone.
