ESPN RPI & KenPom Update (thru 12/30)
First up, an update from the KenPom rankings through last nights' win against Virginia: National Ranking: 46th
Big 12 Ranking: 8th
Projected Conference Record: 7-9
Projected Overall Record: 20-11
SOS: 321st
A Few Other Notes from KenPom - The team is shooting an effective FG% of 53.7% which is 36th in the nation, meanwhile we are holding teams to just 40.9% which is 8th in the nation. We have a turnover percentage of just 16.8%, which is 17th in the nation. We are holding opponents to 40% for 2pt FG, which is 10th in the nation. 34.9% of our points come from 3pt FG, which is 30th in the nation. Only 22.7% of our playing minutes come from the bench, which is 326th (out of 345) in the nation (shows how long our starters are playing).
An update from the ESPN RPI: RPI Rank: 95th
Lunardi Preferred RPI Rank: 15th
SOS: 297th Offensive Quotient: 29th
Defensive Quotient: 19th
Adjusted Scoring Margin: 15th

Re: ESPN RPI & KenPom Update
What is the Lunardi preferred rank?
-
Re: ESPN RPI & KenPom Update (thru 12/30)
The Lundardi preferred rank is just something that their bracketology guy came up with, from my understanding it is a few adjustments to the RPI ranking that he uses to determine teams to make the tourney.
It uses additional factors such as record over the last 12 games, scoring margins, etc...

We need to get that RPI into the 60's.

And the challenge at that point won't be so much ISU's RPI, but W-L vs. high-RPI teams. That's helpful for building a tournament resume —*and I don't intend to be premature with any expectations like that; it's simply a way to measure relative strength.
I'll be curious how the record is vs. RPI top 50 and RPI top 25.

@ Neb
Vs KU
Vs Baylor
@ OSU
@ Mizzou
Vs Tech
Vs Okla.
@ Colorado
It would be nice if we could beat Neb, Tech, Okla, and one of either Baylor and/or Co. Going 4-4 in that stretch would be awesome, because the next 5 games are very tough:
Vs KSU
@ KU
@ aTm
Vs Mizzou
@ Texas
We could easily lose all 5 of those games. Going from 4-4, to 4-9.
With the last 3 conf games:
Vs Neb
Vs CO
@ KSU
Winning 2 of those 3 would be nice. Bringing our Conf record to 6-10. If you offered that to me right now, I'd take it.
Throw in a possible upset in Hilton and we are 7-9.

As much as I think the results of the first 3 games (@NU, KU, BU) sets a telling tone, if nothing else, I'd like to see solid results as the season progresses ... last few years ISU has had a record like 12-4, then, missed opportunities pile up and before you know it, we're 13-11.
I agree, 4-4 would be a promising start — if that's the case, though, I would like to snag at least one of those next five, at minimum. I think KSU at home is beatable, possibly Mizzou. I don't like the odds at A&M, UT and KU (naturally).

Looking at that schedule, the Nebraska game is just huge for us if we want to build any momentum going into those 4 tough games.

I'll be curious how the record is vs. RPI top 50 and RPI top 25. I'm going to go out on a limb and say those records are both 0-0.

Re: ESPN RPI & KenPom Update (thru 12/30)
If this team wins 20 games, it will be dancing. 7-9 in conference play is good enough to make the big dance. I honestly think this team will win no more than 4 however.

Re: ESPN RPI & KenPom Update (thru 12/30)
What's impressive about the Ken Pomeroy stats is that we get a lot of steals and blocks without sending opponents to the line. That's a sign of good coaching IMO. McD's teams didn't foul, but that's because they were very passive defensively.
