Surprisingly, the OWH's Iowa State coverage isn't half bad.
On the other hand, whenever ISU tries something "special," it seems to end in a letdown (with the exception of the All-Century night, when ISU almost blew it by losing to Nebraska).
This analysis is equal parts glass-half-full, glass-half-empty.
Nice article. The first couple paragraphs of this story should be required reading for those new to ISU hoops:
"The following is no overstatement:
Anyone who ever attended an Iowa State basketball game and watched coach Johnny Orr come on to the floor with the band blaring the theme song from “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson” will never forget it.
Opposing coaches would come out of the locker room early just to watch the commotion.
Former Kansas coach Roy Williams would clap. Former Nebraska coach Danny Nee would laugh and shake his head at the uproar from the introduction. Even cranky old Norm Stewart from Missouri couldn't suppress a smile when Orr bounced onto the court like a movie star waltzing down a runway."
I remember those days and the crazy crowds of the 90s. Hope to see a sold out and constantly rocking Hilton tomorrow night! Wish I could be there.
This reminded me of the ISU mentions in John Feinstein's book "A Season on the Inside". Had to go find it to find the Danny Manning quote: "One thing I know for sure, though, it's going to be great when their band plays 'Here's Johnny', and Coach Orr comes down the runway. Now that's what I call fun."
Manning was right. Feinstein also wrote about the entrance " If there is a better act in college basketball, no one has found it yet." And on a wonderfully cold January 13, 1988, Manning and the Jayhawks lost again to ISU!
