Maybe Baylor took a page out of the chiz's playbook?
I will be the first to voice the opinion that college basketball is a recruiter's game. That makes wins like this even more impressive. I still think recruiting is probably 80% of the battle in college basketball as it pertains to consistent success, but Fred is showing you can have success against teams with more talent if your guys play hard.
ISU reminds me somewhat of Drake in 08. Maybe not the best athletes on the floor, but they play as a team and with heart. The offensive sets seem similar too ... spread the floor and drive to the basket or pass for the open jumper.
ISU will cause a lot of heartburn for other coaches the rest of the way.
And how about Colorado? Lots of mojo out there.
I do not think Iowa State belong in bottom of big 12 this year. We got beat by very good Nebraska team. We also got beat by good KU team who exposed our weakness (inside game). I think we are going to have some quality wins this year.
Big 12 North > South
I wouldn't say that Hilton Magic is "back", but I definitely think that Fred is giving the fans what they need for the "magic" to be rebuilt: hope. The belief that we could beat ANYBODY in Johnny's days at Hilton (and even with TF and LE) is what created the magic. Our fans would give everything and more for any game we were struggling in not just because they loved our team, but because they really thought we could win every game.
That hope disappeared under GMac when we would lay eggs and our home record was horrible. Games like today and the KU game will do wonders in bringing fans back into the mold. If this year finishes like its going now (7-9 or so in the Big XII, NIT) and non-conference play is successful next year with Royce, Chris Allen, and the other new guys (maybe 1 or 2 losses), "Hilton Magic" might really be back.
I do have to say though, as a long-time Cyclone who remembers almost everything from about 1994 until now (and has seen a lot of video footage from before then), these last two games have been the most fun I've had in Hilton since at least the Virginia game under Morgan. There has been some "magic" propelling our undermanned squad, and I hope it can keep going. Let's win out at home and get at least one on the road; I don't think that task is impossible!
