At various times some had some or all of these keys and some of them didn't. I remember learning on an old manual Royal when I was a kid that I know didn't have a 1 or 0. I don't remember if it had an !. I do think it had a cents sign (on the 6 key) which is interesting since that can be created with a c, backspace and slash. Some older machines had a 1/2 key and others didn't.
After that CTTB78 definitely has something legitimate to beef about. Looked at my old typewriter (I am guessing it is around a 1984 model), and it has no 1 key, but does have a zero. Interesting.

I originally learned to type on a Remington console and Smith Corona portable typewriters -- they had no one, or zero keys; had to use lower case 'l' and upper case 'O'. When I was in the Navy, I used IBM Selectrics which have one and zero keys and which the original IBM AT and XT keyboards were based upon. I loved the old Selectrics as they came with a correction ribbon so you could correct your mistakes on the fly instead of using "White Out", or correction tape, then precisely lining up your paper and retyping the correction -- pain in the butt! Then came computer word processors, and correction ribbons, tape and "White Out" became things of the past, thank heaven. Yeah, typing formal papers used to be a real chore back in the day; not so much anymore. Oh, and let's not forget about carbon paper, or maybe we should.

He makes good points, especially about coaches that cheat continuing to have jobs, but the kids are ineligible sometimes for mistakes, i.e. unintentional wrongdoing.
And the Diante thing was nice and direct!

Re: Lutz's latest ChalkTalk blog post
All this worrying has me so worried that I'm afraid I don't know what to worry about next.
