(For the younger posters on older manual typewriters there was no "1" key, you simply used a lowercase L.)

Yeah, it's 50/50. Every time he types a date (before 2000) the leading 1 is an l. He appears to be trying but some old habits die hard.

Any idea when this changed? I have a manual typewriter from the 1980s and am pretty sure it has the 1.

I have not been able to find anything definitive on this. It sounds more like beyond the alphabet portion of the QWERTY keyboard there was a lot less standardization so manufacturers felt more comfortable removing the 1, 0 and ! from a keyboard since these could be approximated with other keys (lower case L, capital o, and apostrophe followed by a backspace and period. At various times some had some or all of these keys and some of them didn't. I remember learning on an old manual Royal when I was a kid that I know didn't have a 1 or 0. I don't remember if it had an !. I do think it had a cents sign (on the 6 key) which is interesting since that can be created with a c, backspace and slash. Some older machines had a 1/2 key and others didn't.

After that CTTB78 definitely has something legitimate to beef about.
