I know how many people love stats. Here are a few noteable ones comparing non conference games only compared to conference games only.
Positive Stats
Team Free Throw % 68% to 82%
Diante ppg 17 to 19
Jake ppg 11 to 14
Negative Stats
Scott 3 pt % 52% to 34%
Ejim FG % 56% to 35%
Ejim 3 pt% 35% to 13%
Ejim PPG 13 to 8
Team 3 pt % 39% to 33%
PPG 78 to 59
A/TO Ratio 1.4 to 0.9
Opponents FG % 36% to 46%
Opponents 3 pt % 29% to 37%
These stats point out the team's overall defense in conference, and their ability to turn defense into offense. Out of conference, the team routinely made easy baskets on the break after a rebound or turnover our way. The team hasn't been doing that nearly as well during this losing streak. Fred's current team needs easy baskets after solid defensive stands in order to win games. Unfortunately, our team has looked lethargic on defense. I don't know if the shallow roster is catching up to them, or what, but this MBB team has the look of having lead weighted shoes. I just don't see much spring in their step in running, moving on defense, and jump shooting. Maybe an earlier start time in games will help with the energy, or the lack there of, and the Hilton crowd will provide the extra boost they need to "get over the hump."
Some of these are not big surprises IMO. The one that is, is Ejim's 3 pt shooting. He looked decent in non-conf; not great but if left open he could occasionally knock one down. Lately, he has looked really bad on 3 pointers. He's getting just as good a look as earlier just not hitting them; its probably a confidence thing or as has been discussed, hitting the Freshman wall. I realize that if he starts knocking some down its not going to turn the team around or anything, but it could certainly help.
Scott has been on a cold stretch lately finally got on last game again. I think its partly because teams are focusing on him more in conference games but I also wonder if his elbow is still affecting his shot more than they say. Hopefully he just needs his confidence back!

What would you expect? Seriously?
The bottom line is that we have scheduled very weak non-conference schedules over the past several years and the Big 12 is a very tough conference.
I, for one, hope we move towards a more challenging non-conference schedule as our program begins to rise again. Weak non-conference schedules do not prepare you well for a conference like the Big 12 and can lead to a false sense of security...witness this season.
I like the way Michigan State schedules in the non-conference...not afraid of tough road games as opposed to a diet of nothing but weaker teams at home. Orr scheduled a tougher non-conference schedule as we improved...Indiana, etc. Hoiberg needs to do the same.
I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.
