You would take an unproven coach over one that has been to the final 4 time after time again. You need to stay out of the Koolaid.

I think the OP is focused on future and growth. Take for instance MSFT in 2004, a proven winner over the years when GOOG comes along and what do they both look like now? Then again AAPL blows them both out of the water, but I digress.

No one would look at the past of both coaches and Let Me Mayor Coach, but the OP is looking at the future. We all hope he's dead on.

You are correct, i was talking long-term for the program.

It would be idiotic to take Hoiberg over Izzo for the next five or so years. But for the long term (20+ years) benefit of the program, i made an argument for FH. I knew i wouldnt get many in agreement but i thought it may be a person or two that have OD'ed on some kool-aid before.

I want to preface this by saying this is all hypothetical, and the basis is to settle a dumb debate. Flame all you want.

A co-worker (A MSU alum/big fan) and I were discussing and comparing our two coaches, i made the comment that if given the choice right now between the two, i'd take The Mayor as the coach at ISU. the main drivers behind my bold statement were:

Age: Izzo wont be coaching forever, Fred has just begun his long (hopefully) career

Long-term stability: If Fred has even a little success, i feel he will be here for the long term, with little doubt he will go onto another program or the next level. Same cannot be said about Izzo.

This Year: Though Izzo has had some amazing success, i believe you can make an argument he has lost his team, despite returning the vast majority of their final four team from last year, its a toss-up if they will make the tourney this year. This was to prove he is not Jesus like many Spartan faithful make him out to be.

The Mayor factor: Last and most importantly, Tom Izzo could not score 17 straight points against Kansas.


Any other delusional fans out there?

The OP did admit he was delusional in the original post... I obviously want Izzo as HC and then Fred be an assistant for 2-3 years under a legend and then Fred can take his job back after he learns from the best... duh. Best of both worlds.

Izzo is a god when it comes to coaching! Has done a tremendous job at MSU! It does seem as though he might have lost this team but no one will want to play MSU at the end of the season. His teams are tough at crunch time. Will they fold before that? Not sure.

Wonder if his flirtation with Cleveland has anything to do with this struggle? I don't blame him for listening...I would not have blamed him for taking that huge offer even though Cleveland is bad. He seems to be a first-class guy all the way.

You wouldn't think so but things have never been the same at Florida since Donovan almost went to Orlando (well, in that case he actually did go and then came back).

At any rate, I can assure you that competitive recruiters try to use anything they can against another school...like a coach entertaining offers to move elsewhere maybe not being committed to the program.

By the way, even venturing to compare Izzo to Hoiberg is ludicrous.

Shirley and Nurse fouled out. Fizer finished the game with 4 fouls. The double foul (blarge) involved Shirley and fouled him out.

Izzo is only 56, so really not that old. He could easily be coaching another 10 years.

I do think Hoiberg will end up being at ISU for a long time, especially if he can keep bringing in solid players, but at this point you'd have to take Izzo. He is proven and has done it over and over.

Izzo does make over 3x more per year, so if you factor that in.. it might make a difference!
