You only get 13 scholarship players on the roster, it doesn't matter where the scholarship comes from.
At my high school there were many small scholarships given out by local businesses. As a student you'd apply, maybe write an essay and interview. The "committee" would select the winner from the pool of applicants. Typically, these were for small time things, like books, one year room and board, etc.
The problem comes as follows... let's say Yellow Snow Engineering is a business offering a full ride scholarship to an in-state student. Let's say one of the applicants happens to be a bad assed baller. As President of the company, I choose to give him the scholarship if he goes to Iowa State as a condition of the scholarship. Voila - he gets a full ride. That has to count against the 13. Otherwise players all over could be steered to certain schools, and certain schools could carry a roster of more than 13 scholarship worthy athletes. That is the reason there are limits in the first place. So Duke (or academic types with Duke rooting interests) can't give out 25 scholarships to field a team.
A walk on player has to be just that... a walk on and pay his own way. That way, theoretically, if a great player was walking on at Iowa State, UNI could come along and offer a full ride and get them to play there. Iowa State cannot offer financial incentive for the player to stay on the roster. It would have to be on a voluntary basis.
Unless they are Football players!!! If Rhoads has an open Scholly he could put Lucious on a football scholly and walk on to basketball. Football Schollies overtake Basketball.. and basketball takes over all others. This is the only way i see it being done. It's no different than the two football walk-ons now.
i swear to god if we waste another scholle on someone who averaged 6 points per game i'm going to crap out of my mouth
You look at statistics too much! He is a very good player, would be best on our current roster. He's been behind NBA players his whole career.
Name one. kalen lucas is not even a top 40 pick. mich st does not send guys to the draft kinda like duke but thats another thread. it is safe to say hes been behind a good college player nothing special i swear to god if we get him i am going to fart out of my arm
I'm still only 50/50 he will be a Cyclone, but if he is it would not surprise me if he is not on scholarship while he's sitting out. Wouldn't surprise me either way, but people making it out like it's a deal-breaker if we don't have a scholly available are wrong. There are other ways.
academic scholarship -- possible loophole/gray area if said player doesn't play at all. He has to sit out next year anyway -- can he get a legit academic scholarship and not be on the roster but still practice? Don't know the rules. Definitely know that you can't have more than 13 actual players on any type of scholarship. Just don't know if you can kind-of take a year off from basketball and have an academic scholarship instead. Probably not -- I'm sure someone else would have already been doing that for redshirts.
The comments below the article were very encouraging in terms of his character and leadership skills.
Really starting to hope he doesnt come here, we need to save schollys for the 2012 class which is loaded with good prospects who are interested in us.
Please stop acting as though you know what you are talking about. Innumerable football walkons get some type of scholarship money, and don't count against the 85. Doubtless Bubu gets some type of academic scholarship money, and does not count as one of the thirteen.
If you really think that you are correct, find and quote the NCAA regs, rather than offering hypothetical scenarios.
