We Still have a chance! (For the NIT)
With 2 conf. games left,
- Colorado,
- @ K-State...
- then the 1st game of the Conf. Tournement
We are 15-14. We need a Packed House at Hilton, and a HUGE effort to defeat a team in Colorado that we should win!!! (16-14)
Then with the worst case scenario, loss, loss... 16-16 NIT BID!
Have a read.
NIT Selection process
In the past, NIT teams were selected in consultation with ESPN, the television home of the NIT. The goal of the NIT was to sustain the MIBA financially. Therefore, schools selected to play in the NIT were often major conference teams with records near .500 that had large television fan bases and would likely have a respectable attendance for tournament games on their home court. The latter is one reason why New Mexico was invited virtually every year the Lobos had a winning season but failed to qualify for the NCAA tournament.Seeding considerations and home court advantage included the number of fans willing to show up to each game. In an effort to maintain some quality, a rule saying that a team must have a .500 record to qualify for the NIT was imposed. This prevented ESPN from suggesting major conference teams that finished at or very near the bottom of their conference standings but would likely garner good fan interest.
The NCAA announced a revamped selection process starting with the 2006 tournament. The main highlights are:
- Teams are no longer required to have .500 or greater records to receive bids. Even with this change, however, all teams receiving invitations for the NIT have had .500 or greater records.
Re: We Still have a chance! (For the NIT)
We'd have to win out, and win 2 in the conference tournament to even sniff an NIT bid. Our weak non-con really hurts in that regard.
Re: We Still have a chance! (For the NIT)
Nice work put into your case about making the NIT, but I don't see it happening.
Re: We Still have a chance! (For the NIT)
We have no chance to make the NIT, season is done after we lose a game in the Big 12 tourny
Re: We Still have a chance! (For the NIT)
Yeah the way the NIT goes nowadays, it is done by a selection process that makes it really hard to get in unless you have more going for you. That said, I'd love an invite. First, I'd love to beat Colorado.

Agreed. Making the NIT now is completely different than making the NIT 10 years ago. Back then if you played in a big conference and finished above .500, you would make it. Now you actually have to be a decent team. I suppose if we won our last 2 games and went 1-1 in KC we'd have a slim chance.
Re: We Still have a chance! (For the NIT)
We beat a bunch of patsies to start the season, and are just 2-12 in the Big 12. I think we'd have to win out, and then win 1-2 in the Big 12 tourney to be considered.
Re: We Still have a chance! (For the NIT)
Don't do this to yourself, man! :biglaugh:
Re: We Still have a chance! (For the NIT)
The hell with the NIT just win out baby and go to the big dance!!!!
Re: We Still have a chance! (For the NIT)
I'd say we have a better chance at the NCAA than the NIT. At least we can make the NCAA by winning our conference tournament. Our out-of-conference RPI and conference record are so bad I doubt we even get looked at for NIT.

The conference record is going to be the killer — of course it'll require winning out in regular season at minimum -- Texas Tech made it at 4-12 last season. NC State was 5-11 in the ACC. Opening-round win in the B12 tourney is probably essential, too.
Winning out then winning the first 2 games seems highly unlikely. But if that did happen, it's beyond "sniff" (but probably still short of "lock" — partly dependent on number of regular season winners of 1-bid leagues that don't get their auto bid.)
20-15 with 4 additional at-large teams getting into the NCAAs ... I like the NIT chances w/ that.
Re: We Still have a chance! (For the NIT)
This thread is embarrasing.
In order to go to the NIT, you need a Top 90 RPI to be in the conversation. Top 80 is more realistic.
Iowa State's RPI is 141
Re: We Still have a chance! (For the NIT)
we'd probably have to win the next 2 and go to the b12 championship game

Because I don't think the NIT is going to take 7 Big 12 teams in a 32 team tournament.
