I think that they have some nice pieces. Should be improved next year. I still don't see many difference makers. Seems like a team of role players. ISU SHOULD take a much bigger step forward next season. But even though they should have quite a bit more talent than iowa, they have more unknowns and a question at PG, which is the most important spot on the floor. Still, they play at Hilton and I can't see any way that ISU loses head to head. One thing I will say, UNI better have savored their #1 spot in the state, because they are destined for 3rd from here on out.
Fred vs Fran? Too early to say. I think that Fred did more with less this year. Fran has shown the ability to spot talent, but with the transfers, Fred will have more talent next season to work with while iowa should have the same group slowly improving. Long term recruiting has yet to be proven out. So far, Fred has done a better job, but it's WAY early.
I'll take The MAYOR!
I think we're set to have a great future with Fred at the helm. However I also think Iowa has a bright future. Iowa fans have plenty of reasons to be excited. Iowa's two best players are Basabe and Cartwright. Two players that Fran brought in on short notice last year. Right away this tells me that Fran can evaluate talent and knows what kind of talent is needed for the B10, that's an improvement over Lickliter.
Lots of ISU fans are excited that we're playing more uptempo, even if it has led to some horrible defense outings, why shouldn't Iowa fans be excited that their team is now also playing faster. Also saying Iowa had a terrible season just because they lost 20 games is ignorant. The Iowa team that beat Purdue and lost to Michigan St today is light years ahead of the Iowa team that lost to SDSU to open the season. The improvement of the team over the course of the year should give Hawk fans reason to be optimistic.
I think it's great that fans of both teams have a genuine reason to be optimistic and enthusiastic about their futures. It's been awhile since we were able to say that. It's great for the state of Iowa when both schools have good competitive teams.
The two teams had somewhat similar years. Both teams were getting used to new coaches, lost some close games and had trouble closing out at the end of games.
I think ISU fans are rightfully excited at having Hoiberg back in Hilton. Iowa fans are excited to see a guy who actually seems passionate about being the Hawkeye basketball coach. While the coaches are taking different paths towards filling their rosters, the future looks bright on both sides of the state.
To answer the question, as others have said, it's way to early to tell, but both teams have shown improvement. For Iowa St, I have to say your players are exciting to watch and the difference in simply coaching appears a major step up from your previous coach. Also, with the studs you guys have coming in next year, I'd say you're doing well if the team comes together (which I believe they will). Fran is similar. He's way more energized and enthusiastic than Lick and his players show they'll fight and rally around him. While we haven't had as highly touted guys commit, we're getting players the fan base can get excited about (athletic). While I think you guys will be better in the near future, I believe it's fair to say our rivalry will once again be strong down the road. Hopefully sooner rather than later.
Also, the fans you guys are hearing from are probably still living it up from beating #6 Purdue. It was a good win, but it doesn't make a season. Good luck to BOTH teams. Seriously, I want to really look forward to our rivalry in both football and basketball.
Don't relegate UNI to third behind Iowa, too quickly. UNI's recruits are better then Iowa's.
They are almost always a few head scratching results in last conference games of the season.
Remember the moribund GMac team beating KSU ON THEIR FLOOR, to end last season?
Iowa sucks. That is all you need to know.
Iowa plays at UNI while UNI plays at ISU. I'm as excited about the UNI game as any...I despise them.
In a semi related story, my cousin posted a link on facebook about Stanzi being the best QB in the 2011 NFL draft. And a lot of them actually believe this.
After I made a comment that the article made me laugh, he said, "just because ISU can't get a good QB is no reason to be bitter...I said we already have 2 QB's in the NFL, but good point.
I think a legit argument could be made. They have better wins but worse losses. I think Fran is a good coach, and while Cartwright and Basabe are good players I still think he needs to prove he can recruit at this level.
