Re: Bruce Pearl Fired
Bruce will be on the shelf for at least a couple of years. UT had no choice--they are looking down the barrel of big time NCAA sanctions. Local sources are saying chances are very good Bruce would have been suspended by the NCAA for at least one year. But that won't be known until this summer when the NCAA hearing occurs--way too late to be hiring a new basketball coach. Also, firing Bruce now allows UT to cut a deal with the NCAA and potentially avoid big sanctions.
Bruce will probably get the Kelvin Sampson tag from the NCAA, making it very difficult for him to be hired at the college level for quite some time.
The thing that is the most pathetic is he lied to the NCAA about a secondary violation, then tried to cover it up. If he would have come clean from the beginning, none of this would have happened.

Full disclosure: I can't be sure from this picture if this is in fact his current wife.
To say the least, its been an action packed time in Knoxville for Bruce.

Agreed. He is the poster child now for the phrase "It's not the crime, it's the cover-up." The original violation was just having someone at his house on an unofficial visit, right? I'm not sure that's the worst sin in the coaching world.
Lying about that leads to problems. If he lied because he knew there was more to uncover, that's one thing, but they haven't really announced anything earth-shattering, have they?

Right--the original violation was hosting recruits at a cookout at the head coach's house. The NCAA had a photo taken by one of the recruits parents of Bruce and the kid and others--they asked Bruce if he knew where the photo was taken and he claimed he did not. The recruit was Craft who ended up at Ohio St. He then allegedly called Craft's dad and tried to coach him through the upcoming interview with the NCAA.
Amazingly enough, I don't think there are/were any major violations--a bunch of secondary violations that became much worse due to the lying/cover-up.

He's been to the NCAA Tournament 8 times out of the 10 seasons he's been a coach, including 3 sweet 16s and an Elite 8. If you seriously think he's done as a D1 coach, then you need to learn about basketball.

Re: Bruce Pearl Fired
IMO I think Pearl showed legit remorse for what he did. It isn't crazy to think that he tried covering up a minor violation due to the NCAA's history of handing out unfair punishments for minor violations while letting major violations at more prominent programs go unpunished. You look at the things Pearl said and compare that to what Tressel said and you tell me who showed actual remorse. Pearl will get hammered by the NCAA while Tressel will probably have the NCAA reduce his self imposed 5 game suspension back to 2 games. This is how the NCAA works.
In regard to the people who brought up Calipari.... BINGO. How is it that 2 different basketball programs under his leadership get nailed by the NCAA for violations and have to vacate Final Four seasons yet never once has Calipari gotten in trouble with the NCAA? The NCAA is trying to say that these basketball programs were cheating but the man in charge of running these basketball programs had no part in the violations? Get real....

Not saying he's done forever, but he won't get a job for the next couple of years.
