If he screws up again, you might have reasoning to light the torches, until then, give the guy a break. As far as effects on his career, making stupid choices can be career-limiting. That would be too bad for him, but a self-inflicted career.
For my money, there's no excuse for keeping him. Employment is a privilege, and he's not earned it with this decision.

There are plenty of schools that would hire him now and in the future. Will it be a step down? Could be, if that is what the market dictates. This would support the action to fire him. Do you honestly think stupidity will not, or should not, have adverse effects on his career?

Re: Cornell Mann arrested for OWI in Dayton, OH Tuesday
I would can him but that's me. Total irresponsibility considering the position. He doesn't work at a Wells Fargo call center. He should be held to a higher standard. He has done nothing positive at ISU to warrant retaining him.
Having said that, I fully support the decision Coach Hoiberg makes here.

You're right. I'm sure neither of you have ever made a bad decision in your days and completely deserve your employment for your non-stop upstanding citizenship displayed with every movement you have ever made.
I don't have a DUI, I'm very cautious along those lines, but I sure as hell have made some ******* decisions in my life. Mistakes happen, you learn from them and move on.
Of course that won't matter to many of you, messageboards are like magnets to the vocal minorities with the over the top view points who only see in black and white.

Having said that, I fully support the decision Coach Hoiberg makes here. So, high profile people should always be held to a higher standard? Tell that to CEOs, politicians, head coaches, pro players and all that are not held to high standards compared to the "peons" of the corporation that face tighter sanctions for the same errors.
Our society is one of hypocrisy, and will most likely always be that way. The people lower down on the chain will always have greater losses than those higher up.
EDIT: I'm just using your statement as a means to an end; I realize that you spoke that you would support his decision.

Even despite your lack of self-righteousness, I am sure you have done things that have had adverse effects on your career. Maybe you were genuinely against it then too- still makes your argument illogical.
Mistakes do happen, people have to deal with the consequences and move on. Thinking someone should lose their job for demonstrating stupidity, as well as sacrificing job performance only requires logic, not perfection. It is unfortunate, but if you are in demand, part of your compensating wage is leniency. Mann is not irreplaceable, and thus not immune. Originally Posted by Mann So 68% of driving fatalities are caused by SOBER drivers?! What's their excuse? That 99% of driving is done while not drunk?

Re: Cornell Mann arrested for OWI in Dayton, OH Tuesday
Would it be possible to dismiss him without buying out his 3 year contract?
The three-year contract Mann received at Iowa State is a rarity for assistant coaches in Division I college basketball.
"It just shows that’s how they feel about you as an assistant," Mann said Wednesday afternoon. "They want to make a commitment as we make a commitment to them." Former WMU assistant Cornell Mann hired at Iowa State | MLive.com -

Re: Cornell Mann arrested for OWI in Dayton, OH Tuesday
I've done stupid things but nothing close to getting an OWI by being double the limit one week after getting the best job of my life. Maybe I'm just smarter than average.
We may not be able to fire him for this, legally, but can we make Fred wear an "I'm with Stupid" t-shirt when they are together?.

I'm not trying to be argumentative, I'm just trying to see this from another standpoint. What separates the incident that killed your friend compared to what Mann has done?
In my mind, the two scenarios are essentially equal. In each case, the driver is displaying a lapse of sound judgement. There is no intent to harm in either scenario, but there is certainly an intent to drink to that point and to drive. With that decision is a recognition of the inherent danger. Regardless of the outcome (a continuum from not getting caught to getting caught for speeding to getting caught for one-car accident to getting caught for a multi-car accident, etc.), it demonstrates immaturity, poor judgement, and a lack of respect in addition to the obvious physical threat it poses.
