That's football, a sport with, what, a 70 man roster or so? Basketball teams have 15 guys, its newsworthy when one leaves, even if he didn't stand to have much playing time. You are probably right that these events don't get announced, but it does seem strange to me that no words about his departure came out until this occured.
If you go look at the other John Lamb thread, 1/2 of this board doesn't even know who John Lamb is. I would bet more ISU fans don't know him than do. If he had played like Bubu Palo or Cameron Lee, that would be different.

The only reason I knew who he was, was because of this poster given away at a bball game. I remember the night I got the poster looking at it thinking "who the hell is John Lamb?"
Maybe not since he was a walk-on and was under no financial obligation to the school or team.
The very reason of not making a statement regarding it may be because he was a walk-on, but even as a walk-on, he is a representative of the team (which they've never said he wasn't that I've seen) and therefore the university.
It'd be better just to hear that he was kicked off well before this in March, boom, done deal, moving on.

This is my thought too. If he was a known academic liability and you had agreed he not be on the team for that reason why not put out a quick press release? I know John was on the team during mid-March or so, I wonder when all of this "officially off the team" stuff happened.

I don't know how much more Fred could "Mayor coach" than to dismiss Lamb from the team for this issue months before it ever happened!
"There are five real good recruits in the state. We got three of them. One couldn’t get into school, and the other went to (the University of) Iowa...which is about the same thing." - Coach Johnny Orr
Any trouble our basketball team gets in between now and next fall will bother me NONE if they win 20+ games.
They could lose 20 and the actions of a former walk-on would still be irrelevant. But yes, the prestige of the program is largely based on what happens between Nov and March.
