Wow, can't believe that so many people think he won't need to bulk up at all. Yes, there have been skinny players that have been successful in the NBA, but no being skinny is not an advantage. He's going to really struggle finishing at the rim in the NBA at his size, but more importantly he's going to struggle defensively at his size. Guards with a good post game are gonna get him on the block and go to work.
Do I think his size is going to keep him out of the NBA? No, I think he'll get a shot, probably as an undrafted FA but if he wants to stick in the league he's going to need to put on some weight.
Count me as someone who doesn't think he needs to add much bulk. What's more important is that he can consistently knock down the open J. Since the new handcheck rule was implemented a few years back guys like DG have prosperred in the NBA using there great quickness. Wouldn't hurt to add a little bulk, he's got all the other tools. I think he might be a solid bench player for some team.
Rondo only weighs 177 and that is probably giving him a little bit, what is Garrett? 165-170? I dont think he will have much of a problem as people think with the weight. As a point guard all you have to do is defend, mostly quick guards other than Billups; keep defenses honest, hes shown that potential in 1 year; have great ball skills, also has shown that; and the ability to make plays for others, which is obviously no problem for him since he led the big 12 in assists this year. No offense, but if Will Blalock can get drafted and hes 5'11 had great ball handling skills and passing skills, but was not that great of a shooter either, especially had a slower release. I have no doubt that a kid who is 6'5 and already possesses those skills and more will get drafted. The work ethic and personality is also going to impress scouts too.
Nobody is saying it wouldn't be helpful for him to bulk up but it's not something that's going to keep him out of the league.
I still can't believe people are comparing DG to Durant, Rondo, Reggie Miller, etc. Those guys have something DG doesn't and never will...elite talent. It's not a knock on DG it's simply the truth. Comparing him to Durant (one of the most unstoppable college players ever) is ridiculous. Yea they're both skinny. The comparison stops there.
...PS, I hope you realize I'm kidding.
I'm not so sure that DG needs to bulk up. I don't think that being 190 is going to be the deciding factor for him. Rose is only 190 at 6-3, and there are some smaller ones, like Rondo. I think what will hurt DG the most is his shooting ability. He needs a little more consistency from outside to really catch the eyes of the scouts, especially from 3 point range.
I do think that FH is going to be a huge help for DG getting some good looks from some NBA people. I'm not sure we understand just how important FH was for DG this year, and how important that was for ISU. If FH can get the reputation of helping players improve that much, and helping them get looks in the NBA, that will be tremendous for ISU recruiting.
Because the probability that the difference in weight to height ratio between two players is the deciding factor is very, very, low?
Attributing DG not getting drafted because he is skinny is confusing correlation with causation. As the comparison (not equating like the usual suspects want to read it as) to skinny players indicates, if DG can play at a high level he can make it. His shot, decision making, and passing are more concerning than any void possibly caused by being skinny.
I think that's perfectly legit. Look at Rondo's college stats... yeah... we're talking about DG's senior year which Rondo never had... but Rondo was never a scorer in college. DG had him in assists and Free Throw % (by a lot) as a sophomore. And DG was able to prove that he only got better (significantly) as he got older.
Yeah... nobody's comparing him to somebody who was similar in college and failed in the NBA because the point people are trying to make is that it's possible to be successful at the next level despite his weight, so people are listing examples. And I don't think what Rondo did in college vs DG shows a clear difference in Elite talent.
In fact... I'd personally give DG the advantage there. And that's not even considering the surrounding talent each guy had.
