Re: 2011-2012 Season Tip Off
I agree that if ISU is ever going to do it, this is the year to do it. The "we can't waste a practice" excuse goes out the door this year because you get 10 free practices for the pre-season trip. I would really love to hear the legitimate reason(s) why this couldn't be done in mid-October.

I totally agree. Its awesome experience. I get jealous every year I go to KU's season tipoff.
Re: 2011-2012 Season Tip Off
It seems like we used to have something like this. Maybe Blalock/Stinson's first year? I didn't go, but I seem to remember much talk of how Blalock won the dunk contest. Anyone else remember anything along these lines, or do I misremember? I guess I didn't realize this is something we don't usually do. This would go a long way to get the students invested in the team right from the start, sell some tickets, and generally get some really positive buzz.

Great thread. We used to do it years ago, and Hilton would be 75% filled. I agree that this would be a perfect time to start that up again.

I think Royce is in that video. 0:48 and 1:35
Re: 2011-2012 Season Tip Off
I think what the OP is referring to is Midnight Madness.
Re: 2011-2012 Season Tip Off
The fall before the season of the Elite 8 team I remember a scrimmage in Hilton with the women's basketball team and then the men's basketball team. Maybe there wasn't a scrimmage for the women but at least the team was introduced but there definitely was a scrimmage for the men. It was after a home football game on Saturday. This was fairly common in the Johnny thru Larry years and I don't know why it was stopped.
I would think they could make a couple bucks for the Athletic Dept (Charge $3-5 bucks). Sell some mini programs with player number/stats and some write ups. Sell some concessions. Why not? Injury worries? NCAA rules???
Re: 2011-2012 Season Tip Off
The tip off was great until the women got invited. I have no desire to watch anything related to womens basketball. It took away quite a bit from the Mens tip off.
It used to be a blast. 3 point shoot out, dunk contest, player intros, the coach would speak. It brought great excitement.
I would go and pay full ticket price to watch one with the men's team, but probably would stay home if the women's team was invited.

Midnight Madness is awesome! I have been to Illinois a couple of times.

You are correct. I went to that. I think it was right after the ISU vs. Texas game so that you could walk straight from JTS to Hilton. The dunk contest was a lot of fun, but I don't really remember anything else about it.
Re: 2011-2012 Season Tip Off
Having gone to Italy as a team, we should be able to have a decent show this year if we did a Midnight Madness.
Re: 2011-2012 Season Tip Off
The way it was operated, it needed to die (and I'm glad it did).
It was mostly run by the Ames/Story County Cyclone Club. They had auctions during breaks in the on-floor action. Ground the thing to a halt. Brought in terrible "emcees" like Van and Bonnie from WHO Radio. Just absolutely terrible.
