Re: Big XII tournament format
Best way to make a solid round of 8. Good call here.

Re: Big XII tournament format
In the article it sounds like this was a tough decision. I'd be curious to know what else they considered, because this is the only way to do it (if it's single elimination, without multiple byes).

Re: Big XII tournament format
Right. Basically you take the existing 12-team format and replace the 11 and 12 seeds with byes. Like the above post, I'm also curious what other options were considered.

The top two seeds could be the only two to get byes and it would still work.

The Pac 10 women do something goofy with double byes. I forget what they do exactly.

Re: Big XII tournament format
Giving double byes to the 1 and 2 seeds in a 10 team tourney sounds like a terrible idea, and basically ruins the concept of a tournament. The 1 and 2 seeds would be rested playing in the semis against a team playing their 3rd day in a row.

I kind of like the Big East 16-team tournament: 1-4 get double byes, 5-8 get single byes, and 9-16 play in the first round. It rewards teams for doing well, but doesn't have such a steep dropoff between adjacent seeds that the Pac 10 version does.

Kansas vs Texas in the men's final. 8 remaining teams have a three-day tourney (Wed-Fri) for 3rd place.

The 1 and 2 seeds would be rested playing in the semis against a team playing their 3rd day in a row. That concept has a lot of merit for one-bid conferences and is used in many instances. That way the top seeds are justifiably rewarded for their play during the regular season and improves the chances of one-bid conferences getting their best teams in the NCAAs.
For a multi-bid conference like the B12, it's not necessary.
