Regardless, why do YOU think he didn't get drafted? you need to read chris william's article...read what CFH said. then u can bring up those last five draft picks again and see if it makes sense to u

Originally Posted by Creed ok...question though. u thought dg was more of a nba ready prospect last year but you don't think he is this year. just looking on ur third thread u have posted there I didn't say he was more of an NBA-ready prospect last year - if I did, it was a mistake. But he was essentially the same guy this season and last, still really close to being an NBA prospect, but just not quite there.
I don't think NBA scouts care at all that he put up more points per game this year - his shooting percentages weren't really any better. He was never going to be asked to score in the NBA.
He was a borderline prospect before/during his junior season - as you can see from that thread, some people really struggled with this - because he had, and still has, a rare combination of length, quickness, and ball-handling. I doubt there's more than 20 guys in the whole league who are better than DG in all three of those things. And he's a very good passer too. The assist numbers, which you can see I constantly used to defend him when not many others wanted to, are legitimate. But he's never been a shooter. He wasn't great to begin with, and despite all of the talk about how much Hoiberg helped his shot, his eFG% actually decreased.
I don't think his big chance to prove he could be a NBA point guard was this season when he was asked to score 15-20 points a game. But I think his big chance was last season when he had Brackins, Gilstrap, Dendy, Hamilton, Lucca, and Christopherson to take on the scoring load, and he could just facilitate it all - basically take on the role of a typical backup point guard in the NBA. If that team went 10-6 in the league like many thought it could, people would know that he could run a winning team. But no one has ever seen him win, and bottom line, that's what the NBA teams want. He's a point guard who went 15-53 in his conference over four years. And I'm not sure "McDermott was a ****** coach," even if true, is a good enough explanation for NBA teams.
But I truly don't think he really changed that much as a player between his junior season and his senior season - few players do. He just had a major change in role - he had the ball in his hands a lot more because of the lack of other options. His shooting percentage was slightly worse this season. His free throws were better, but he's not really a guy who would get to the line in the NBA. And that's why despite putting up better scoring numbers this year, he never shot up draft boards. It took a couple of pre-draft camps - his measurements were a big part of this, I think - to even be mentioned by guys like Ford and Givony.
That went way longer than I wanted it to. I completely understand if you don't read this.

I'm not going to argue but I couldn't disagree more. I understand what you are saying but I disagree. Just because he didn't magically transform his skills in that one year he proved he could produce. NBA people still want production even though he won't be asked to be a starter...possibly ever.

Re: UPDATE: Hoiberg says Diante Garrett will have options
I thought there were two really good point guards who have a future in the league that were not drafted tonight. Demitri McCamey and Diante Garrett can both play with most of the PGs that were drafted last night.

And Garrett has a better attitude than McCamey.

Re: UPDATE: Hoiberg says Diante Garrett will have options
I agree that DG is essentially the same type of player, but I believe that Fred's offense improved his chances of getting drafted because it was an NBA style offense, and I do think he improved his game this year, maybe not by leaps and bounds but he did improve.
DG didn't get drafted, because like Fred said, so many other players got pushed on the list.
How would you like to be Josh Selby? He went from being considered by some to be the #1 recruit last year, to being the 49th pick in the draft? Ouch.

I think these are good points, you have to think about how many people are eligible to even get drafted. There are 300+ D1 teams, plus a growing number of foreign players and yet only 60 players get picked. When you factor in things like roster space, cap room, drafting for potential development and positional needs its kind of just a crapshoot(especially the 2nd round). But even with that said, I don't think these are necessarily excuses as to why DG didn't get drafted. I think a lot of teams thought DG was a nice prospect but didn't think he was a "must have" type of guy.I think they see him as a nice option for a backup PG and not much else. But I am confident he'll get the chance to prove he's more than that.

It stated clearly that Diante Garrett was better than Cory Joseph at that particular workout. Needless to say, I was surprised (as was Bilas) when Joseph went so early.

I have to wonder if that pick of Joseph was a way to help put ***** in the seats down in San Antonio; draft a local "star" who played just up the road in Austin to help create/sustain local interest.
