    Naz Long eligibility

So Naz Long is visiting for the A&M game correct? If we do get a commitment from him would we have him for 2nd semester of this season 2011-2012 or second semester of next season 2012-2013? And if we do get him for second semester this season when would he be eligible to play? I know the second semester officially begins Monday January 9th so would be available to play Wednesday January 11th against Missouri or sooner than that?

Where is all of this second semester detail coming from?!

He is a class of 2012 recruit, which means he graduates in May 2012. He would arrive on campus either the summer of 2012 or for classes in Fall of 2012, meaning he would play the entire season if 2012-13.

I interpreted it as 2nd semester this season. Why would he come second semester of next season we wouldn't have any scholarships. This season would make more sense considering we have an open scholarship and we need a point guard. Also if he was a 2012 class then he would join next season first semester. I'm thinking that maybe he is going to graduate at semester this year and then come to Iowa State a month after he graduates. That's the only logical explanation. Chris can you clear this up for us?

Thanks for the refresher link isuaggie...

Yes, it would be graduation at December to join the team for the 2nd semester of the 2011-12 season... This is why I should try to post while also working...

    Re: Naz Long eligibility

If he came 2nd semester this year we still wouldn't have a scholarship next year. Of course, there is a plan and Fred knows this but I think he's purely a 2012 guy.

this is just like Jevohn Miller on the football team. he was a 2011 recruit, but he graduated a month early to join the team in January of this year.

    Re: Naz Long eligibility

If it is second semester for this season I don't know how useful a true freshman PG will be after not playing the entire first semester and whole non conference schedule and then trying to jump into the mix when big 12 play starts. Unless the kid is unreal I don't see how it would help that much. When would he be officially eligible to start playing?

No, it isn't "just like" it, because Jevohn didn't join the team in the middle of the season.

I really doubt that Long is actually going to play... it just gives him an extra semester of practice

So he would redshirt for a semester instead of a year. Or if he did play then he would only have three and a half years left to actually play. So he is either burning half a year for a redshirt year or burning half of a year for his actual 4 year eligibility. There is no way that he would come back for the first semester of another year just to play for 4 full years.

the red shirt makes way more sense than trying to step in and play.

If he plays half a season it will be a waste of a year.

agreed 100% if he plays and wastes that year because there is very few situations where a freshman could come in half way through the year and contribute. A redshirt on the other hand would put him at a huge advantage with the extra practice that he would gain.

Not if he goes pro in 2014 - won't matter.
