If Sledge is going to see limited time at best could you see him redshirting?
I don't think he is a lost cause at all. He may very well end up helping this team win games. Let's hope that is the case. All I know is that he only played 5 minutes in an exhibition where Fred was clearly doing a lot of experimenting. That's not encouraging for his immediate future in my opinion.
Here is another take on Sledge... He is a true freshman on a team that finally has a lot of talent, especially at the guard position. In previous years when the team was not deep and not very talented the team would need a freshman to come in and play lots of minutes right away, but not this year. Also, a guy like bubu may not have the talent that Sledge has but this will be his third year at ISU so he has that advantage. When we have Christopherson, Allen, McGee, Babb, and Bubu it is going to be hard to find Sledge a lot of minutes. I mean we may be deeper this year but we still want to have our best players playing major minutes. It will be nice if we can really stomp some of these early teams so that we can get Sledge and Gibson a lot of playing time.
I give the chance at Sledge redshirting at 0%.
What would you say the chances of McGee getting a chance at PG? I thought I read that he was pulled from the 2 spot to the 1 in his first or second year at JUCO. Could he be that guy that could get us into a set and control the game? He seems to be very good w/ energy, defense, and can shoot. He is strong and has some moves that I would trust bring up the ball. What are the possibilities of him having/willing to step into that role? Would you rather have him starting at point and not starting one of the other guards?
Nice point on Hilton Magic. It should be a good time to jump start it back up with the season ticket sales so high. As a student I know tons of people who didn't but tickets last year or follow the team that bought season tickets this year. The interest is there, and with how easy our non conference schedule is, I think Hilton will be a formidable place to play starting the Big 12 season.
I disagree with the Tavon Sledge point though. I am hoping that he can get 10 minutes a game or more once we get into the season so we can have a true point. SC will be a fine game manager and won't make many mistakes, but to me the most important thing a PG can do for this team is penetrate. Penetrate and kick out to the shooters. Sledge is the ONLY point guard on our team who can take the ball into the lane by beating his man (minus Royce at point forward).
So did Hoiberg miss on one of these guys ability to be a point guard? McGee? Sledge? Seems odd that with all of the transfers/recruits that he has this year, he seems to have neglected a pretty important position.
