1990-1991 MBB schedule
I always like to look back and see who we play in the non-conference from previous seasons. Holy smokes look at '90-'91!

That was the year of the infamous scoreboard pass win over Minnesota at Williams Arena.
Gopher Ariel McDonald, with game tied and about 10 seconds left, tries a full court inbounds pass from under the ISU basket. The ball hits the hanging scoreboard over the center of the court, and is ruled a turnover. ISU inbounds under their own basket, gets a basket and a foul, and ISU sneaks out with a win.
The Gophers raised the hanging scoreboard 20 feet the next year.
EDIT: My bad, this was 1991-92. Still fun to remember it though

Yeah, Baugh, Big Vic, and Mack were going to be seniors so Johnny loaded up the schedule. After that he said "Whooooo, man we are going to go get some dogs and were gannna bring em in here and drill em! We are ganna find some teams you never heard of man!"
Someting like that.

I was in school then. Simply a brutal schedule and only 1 of the big 3 made it that far, and by then Big Vic was close to 300 if not more.
Got a little unlucky too. Lost to Houston in Charlotte and then UNC gets upset in the other first round game so we have to play them in the losers bracket.
Our team really wasn't that bad, maybe a bubble team or NIT for sure with the right schedule, but had no chance after running that guantlet.

it really was a different era back then. coaches of BCS schools scheduled each other all the time, now everyone's too afraid of losing and making sure you get the wins to survive a tough conference season.
JO had back-back losing seasons, the sam mack fiasco, players flunking out of school midseason, etc. i don't think coaches are able to survive rough two-year stretches like that anymore.

Interesting look-back.
I remember that bad record in non-conference, although I didn't remember it was 4-10. Wow.
Amusing to think one of the few wins came vs. Michigan — two years after its national title, and one year before the Fab Five. Nice timing!. 
I seem to recall it the schedule was deemed the hardest in the country that year. For some reason I thought it was the 89-90 season when that happened. Maybe I'm confusing it with the fact 89-90 was just plain awful.
Unrelated '90-91 notes: ISU lost to Syracuse ... which became the first victim of the dreaded 2-15 upset in that season's tournament (remember how fun it was when something like that happened?  ) and beat Temple, which ended up going to the Elite 8 (in the same sub-region as Syracuse) ... losing to another team that beat ISU that year, North Carolina.

Orr loaded it up so he could make a run and something special. Too bad it didnt turn out.

Anything with the roster as it was anticipated, and it would've been a decent gambit. Would have needed probably a 10-4 record, even with a fairly challenging non-league slate, but 17-11 might have been a LOCK that year.
Strange thing is, the conference record was, what, 7-7? Just about average for Orr teams, up to that point.
