But ask any coach, and they would love to have a strong PG, because it is such an important position at the college level. Hopefully we can play this position by committee and not have it turn into a weakness. Yeah, I don't necessarily disagree. Strong PG play is always important. But that's always relative to your system and the guys around you. "Strong PG play" can mean a lot of different things depending on the circumstances.
I would also say this. Just for the sake of argument let's say the PG situation is less than optimal. My question would be, well who could we have gotten that would have put us in a better situation. My GUESS would be that we got the best that was available. Again, I'm not conceding that our PG situation is sub-standard.

Re: Tyrus McGee
It was pretty well known that McGee was not a PG since he committed. If I remember right, he was a SG his Freshman year, and he committed before his sophomore year. If Fred thought he was going to be our PG, I'd have to question his thought process, that why I believe he knew he was getting a combo guard. thus not a recruiting bust.

Mcgee is going to this team's version of Uncle Jake.

Re: Tyrus McGee
I still think everyone is just over analyzing this whole thing though. This isn't our typical we just have 1 PG, SG, SF, PF, C and little to no depth. Its more like three guards and two forwards with one of the forwards being our best "PG". Not really a knock to the guards, just a big compliment to the forward.

On this year's team, basically the PG is just the guy who brings the ball up the floor the most. That's an oversimplification, but you get the point.

I guess we see what happens today.

Re: Tyrus McGee
I fully expected to get ripped for this thread, because we all know that message boards aren't the place for an intelligent conversation among fans about their favorite team, right? They are the place for bowing down and inhaling the kool-aid of your favorite team and not questioning anything.
I also figured that about half the people would take my definition of "recruiting miss" the wrong way and assume I was being harsh on Tyrus McGee, which of course couldn't be further from the truth. I don't know how many times I needed to say that McGee is a Big 12 quality player.
I remember Fred commenting on McGee when he was recruited that he believed he could play the point guard position. And the fact is, Hoiberg has now mentioned guys like Scotty, Allen, Bubu, and Sledge for the PG position, and not McGee. So it's a fair assumption that maybe McGee wasn't the PG that Fred thought he possibly could be?
As someone mentioned, Fred is going to put his best possible PG that he has out there. Why wouldn't he? And right now, that is Scotty.... according to Fred, not me. And as CloneIce said... that kinda says something about the PG abilities of some of the other players.
I think most of us would agree that we don't really have a true starting PG right now. So the question becomes... is that a big deal or not? Obviously it's WAY too early to tell right now. Maybe we won't need a true PG all year? I don't know.
But, I'm a little concerned that possibly our best 3 pt shooter, and one of the best 3 pt shooters in the country, didn't get one 3 pt shot off in the first game being our PG. That might have just been a fluke and maybe Scotty will go 5-7 from 3 point range today or something? Also, Grand Valley State's best player on their team by far was their PG, so he probably had something to do with Scotty struggling to get a shot off?
Sorry to try to attempt to start an intelligent conversation about ISU basketball. My bad.

“One day we’ll be in here celebrating a Big 12 championship,” Rhoads said. “That I can promise you.” -

Sorry to try to attempt to start an intelligent conversation about ISU basketball. My bad. It will take some time for SC to get comfortable with the flow of the offense. I know of at least four open looks SC had in the first half (didn't see the second) that he passed up.
They're still trying to gel as a unit and get everyone involved early on. Give it time, keep the faith! And, please cut out the woe is me comments. -
Re: Tyrus McGee
He is one of the top six players on our team. Enough said. Man this is a dumb thread.

Nobody in the thread mentioned the score or result, but I turned on the game on Clone Zone expecting a 20 point ISU loss and none of the new players to seem very talented. The thread was that doom and gloom.
People forget we had a team with an All American point guard lose an early game to a bad Drake team. It's not like an ace point guard is any guarantee of anything. Look at last year with an above average Big 12 point guard.

And we may be getting hung up on traditional 1-5 roles when it sure sounds like we'll have our 1s-3s being interchangeable parts. Sum of the parts type of thing.
But can we play our first game then start lambasting everything Cyclone basketball?

Re: Tyrus McGee
You are still looking at it wrong. Scottie isn't our best option at PG. White is. White is lined up at Point Forward. Scottie is just one of our best players, that is why hes on the court. Scottie and and Allen are both going to be combo guards. Babb SG/SF. Ejim SF. White Point Forward. Its not your typical lineup at all, but we have so many versatile players and a lot of depth and thats what we are running with. Its going to be face paced and players will see different positions depending on who else comes onto the court.
