Look at Colorado last year, they went .500 in conference, 21-13 overall, and a trip to the Big 12 semi finals and didn't make it in. Because their crappy non-conf schedule and some bad losses. (and that was during a year that the Big 12 was good, this year the league is down)

Where is this sentiment that "the Big 12 is down this year" coming from? Is it because we're not going to get two #1 seeds this year? Sagarin and Kenpom both rate the Big 12 as #2 out of 33 conferences. That's ahead of the Big East, the ACC, the SEC and the pathetic PAC 12.

The same ol' formula applies to ISU to make the dance:
    1) avoid bad losses (Texas Tech, aTm, Okie St)
    2) get an upset or two or more against the top teams (Baylor, Kansas, Missouri)
    3) finish with at least .500 conf. record. (probably need more than that due to our week non-con SOS)

BTW, the UNI loss shouldn't show up as a bad loss on our resume - they currently have an RPI of 24. Also interesting: if we had lost to aTm (rpi 233) that would have been significantly more damaging than losing to Drake (rpi 89).

We are definitely in the hunt for an NCAA bid.

Re: Feelings about rest of season?

I don't think the Big 12 is down that much. I wasn't sure how to do a table in here. If someone knows how....take the info below and put it in table form if you like. Anyway...here are the 6 major conferences, and their records against the AP top 25 through yesterday (including games in conference), the winning percentage, the conference's non-conference record, and that winning percentage respectively.

As far as the rest of the year goes....I hope (and expect) to see continued improvement with this team. Specific areas for me are still defense (too many easy and open shots given up), rebounding, and shooting accuracy from 3 point range and from the free-throw line. If they can improve in each of those areas, by March they will be a difficult team to beat.

I think we have all seen that if this team applies itself and plays as a team.......they are tough. I do think the post-season is possible......a minimum 10-8 conference record will be required.

    AP 25 % Non-Conf %

    ACC 4-13 23.5 117-51 69.6

    Big 12 7-12 36.8 110-26 80.9

    Big 10 11-22 33.3 123-28 81.5

    Big East 17-24 41.5 155-45 77.5

    Pac 12 0-12 0.0 89-57 61.0

    SEC 10-16 38.5 125-46 73.1

Re: Feelings about rest of season?

Nobody scares me in the Big 12 besides Baylor, KU, Missouri, and KSU. And I think we can split with Mizzou and KSU.

Obviously we will slip up against someone we shouldn't lose to, but I think we'll pull off a win or two we're not expected to also.

I don't see why we can't go at least .500 in the conference, which by my count would be at least 8 more wins, correct? That would give us 20 wins minimum. I'm not sure with our horrible loss to Drake if 20 wins would cut it though? So we may have to get a win or two above .500 in the conference to make the tourney.

I think we can beat OU, OSU, and TT all twice. And I think we get Texas on the road and A&M at home too. That would get us to 20 right there. Then we need to pull off a win or two against Baylor, KU, Missouri, or KSU. That makes this Weds game against Missouri pretty HUGE if you ask me! If we can get that one, it will go a LONG way towards making it in.

Not us. Not this year. We aren't getting in at 9-9.

I say this because we can go 9-9 in the conference this year without having to beat very many Top 100 RPI teams. If we don't get a couple wins against the top teams in the conference, our resume is going to be pretty ugly.

I thought the Big 12 schedule was going to be tougher with no Colorado or Nebraska, but it's a blessing for us to be able to play all of the old Big 12 South teams twice this year. A&M, Oklahoma, Okie State, and Texas Tech are all very beatable on the road for us.

I'm thinking we beat aTm twice, OU twice, Tech twice and OSU twice to get 8 wins.

I just realized that we don't have to play in Boulder this year. Thank god. It's unbelievable how awful we were out there.

We need to beat Tech and OU twice, we need to beat TAMU again, we need to split with OSU and KSU. Then try to get 2 in 6 between KU, MU, and Baylor.

    Would give us 9-9.

i agree on the 21+... but i think we will be fine in the less important games with this team moving forward at least with the home games. The team is starting to make shots they weren't in the non conference part of the schedule.

I'm feeling good. The team seems like they've turned this thing around. If we win Wednesday night, all bets are off.

Re: Feelings about rest of season?

Were 13-3 if I'm correct I think we will win 20 games for sure and we could win more than that in the big 12 that will give us a chance as a bubble team. We have the players to beat any team in the big 12 but this doesn't mean we will just have to wait and see. Hope we compete with every team in the big 12 this year. This is a very fun group to watch.
    Go Cyclones!
