They should just keep him after practice one night and have him shoot a hundred or so underhanded and see how many he makes. If it doesn't seem like an improvement, don't do it in a game. What would Royce and the staff have to lose?
Royce has a higher FG% than he does FT%. It is a no-brainer to foul him every time he shoots. Odds of making a 2-pointer 53%; odds of making 2 free throws 26%.
or he could just start trying to bank all his free throws. Bank shots are easier than trying to swish them.
I tried this strategy once in my short-lived basketball career in middle school. Got fouled on a shot that went in and figured my best odds on the and-1 free throw as an iffy shooter was the bank shot. Unfortunately I forgot the importance of arc, and my line drive came almost straight back off the glass. Didn't touch the rim so ref whistled it dead, other team's ball.
Not quite as bad as airballing it, but still embarrassing, pretty silly looking.
Royce misses so many free throws so badly for a couple of reasons.
1. He has gigantic hands.
2. He is very strong. If you notice, great shooters rarely are built like Royce and there is a reason for that. It is tougher to get touch on the ball with his size and strength.
3. Anxiety. It is publicized that Royce has some anxiety issues he's had to overcome and it is tougher to find a spot that can fill a person with more anxiety than the FT line.
My guess is we'll see some slight improvement from Royce but he really can't fix these 3 major issues which cause the free throw difficulties.
Science also told us that a 4min mile couldn't be broken.
White bread was good for you.
And the world was flat.
I'm going to keep set shot thank you.
What if he airballs the granny shot? Should he just walk off the court at that point?
