Fred seems to have perfect balance of players' coach vs hard a**
We have a team of confident players that don't second guess themselves and respond well to a good butt chewing. He reminds me of Bill Self in that way. He lets them play but holds them accountable for their actions. I'll admit, I didn't know if there really was a hard a** Fred. What a terrific coach we have. He's going to win a lot of games.

Good players make for good coaches. Fred appears to be able to attact and then get the respect of good players. If Iowa State finishes 4th or better this year, its a great accomplishment in his young career. Still a long ways to go to be a perennial power but definitely on the right track so far!

We caught a lot of **** for hiring Hoiberg with no coaching experience, but I was just floored when we knew who it was and was extremely excited. We have a good coach who knows ISU to a T. Happy as a clam that Pollard hired him.

Ahhh he is ok for a really bad hire. Marty T could do better :)
Re: Fred seems to have perfect balance of players' coach vs hard a**
I like what he is doing as well. The play on Ejim was perfect where he got ejected but Fred understood because Ejim was very frustrated at the refs..
Re: Fred seems to have perfect balance of players' coach vs hard a**
Great point, so many people talk about him being so soft. Look at the table slam right before conference play, and the the CA "shove", and see how the players responded.
Re: Fred seems to have perfect balance of players' coach vs hard a**
I feel that Fred commands respect, and the team doesn't want to let him down. That's a huge benefit especially considering our transfer situation.

He demands respect because he has been there in the college level and the pro's. He is level headed which I love, but gets his point across when needs to.

Lot of fans in the past wanted him to show more "fire." But that's why his level-headed demeanor works — when he does get riled, you know he means it.

Exactly. Yelling does not equal leadership.

If it did, Fran "we're doing it the right way" McCaffery would have the Hawkeyes rated in the top 5 right now.
Re: Fred seems to have perfect balance of players' coach vs hard a**
I have been EXTREMELY impressed in the past month and a half with Fred's coaching. He has these guys playing SO MUCH better in the 2nd half of the season, which IMO is a signature of a good coach.
There were times (I'm not going to lie), that I thought his lack of experience was showing during the non-conference, but he has proven that completely wrong.
The bottom line is that I was never concerned about his ability to sell himself and ISU to recruits, but the unknown was always whether he could translate his immense amount of B-ball knowledge into actual coaching. It looks like that isn't going to be a problem. He's just got to keep the momentum going and get better and better players over time, and we could build a powerhouse program, IMO.
