Re: If Sadler is out at Nebraska....

A question that comes to mind is how/where NU is going to get a steady pipeline of Big Ten-caliber MBB recruits. Are they going to try and break into the traditional Big Ten geographic footprint, where there are already a number of good (and better than NU), well-established MBB programs? Is Doc Sadler a big enough name to steal recruits away from the established programs in the Big Ten geographic footprint? Sounds like a tall order. The natural expoure via conference affiliation to KS/OK/TX/MO is gone. What draws a talented kid from the south, southeast, or west coast, to play MBB at NU?

I'm sure the new BB facilities will be nice, but most major (and for that matter mid-major) programs have nice facilities now.

From the NU MBB perspective, it was a lousy time to switch conferences. FB, WBB, VB, and WR at NU were doing well enough to have some clout in the Big Ten after the conference switch. Not so much for MBB. I could easily see NU MBB being mired in the muck for a long time.

Decent coach who will have to make due with subpar talent, disinterested fan base, and the right composure to deal with rabid media. Who would want that? Even with a new facility and cash infusion into the program I can't see someone like Larry taking the program over. Who knows though.

I wonder if Danny Nee is available?
In hindsight I bet they wish he was. He did more for them than anyone since the old old days.

Who knows. But usually AD's listen to the big $ donors, not the average fan.
But its Nebraska Basketball, how much have they shown they actually listen to those donors.....

Floyd already had his "nod" at USC and he gave it away in an envelope full of cash, which is why he is at UTEP.

I wouldn't wish that on LE. Nebraska is a coaching graveyard. I feel bad for Doc. As for Floyd, I don't think Nebraska will be going back to UTEP for their next coach.

He said "Sadler has had 6 years and we're HORRIBLE, the worst we've ever been."

**Now get this. He also said Nebraska people have paid very close attention to what ISU has done with Fred Hoiberg and the names of Tyronne Lue and Strickland (I can't remember his first name) are being floated out there as possibilities. Apparently, Strickland is in the Lakers front office and Lue is coaching somewhere. But Strickland has no coaching experience at any level, just like FH. Something tells me this wouldn't work out nearly as well for them as it did for ISU!

I beat you to this, BTW. I already created a threat abut this very thing a few days ago.

There is no small amount of jealousy in the Husker Nation for what Iowa State has been able to accomplish in basketball. They view ISU as their peer in every way, and don't see why they can't have every single bit the same amount of success that ISU has had.

The full-page ad that a big Husker doner took out in the World Herald made they case that Nebraska's expenses in men's basketball were at the bottom of the Big Ten at $4.1 million/year. I did some digging, and found somewhere that ISU's spends about $4.5 million/year on men's basketball, so we don't spend that much more, and get a bigger return (especially this year).

Most of the reason for Nebraska's lack of success is that they are a football school, period. Their AD is a former FOOTBALL COACH, who doesn't know the foggiest thing about basketball. I doubt that Tom Osborn has ever even picked up a basketball in his life. Also, 99% of Husker fans don't care for basketball AT ALL. As long as the football team is winning, they are happy, even if the basketball program is in the gutter.

When Tom Osborne was young, they hadn't invented basketball yet. The idea of a round ball was a very new concept. Throwing it through a basket was a bridge to far for that ancient generation.

True about the football school part, but wrong about the Osborne basketball background part. Osborne was a 3 sport star (football, basketball, state discus champion) and was named athlete of the year coming out of Hastings High School. He was a standout in both football and basketball at Hastings College. Granted, it wasn't at the D1 level, but he does at least understand how the game is played.

    Sadler isn't going any where.

If NU fires him, they would have to pay him $66,667/month till June 2016. He's Golden for another year.

The reason Husker fans don't care about NU basketball is because they've never been good. I know that sounds ridiculously simple, but it's the truth. Husker fans will back a winner (see: football, volleyball, baseball until recent years), but they will absolutely not care about a losing team. Even attendance during the Callahan years was noticeably bad (not tickets sold though, thus ensuring the streak lived on).

I think if NU MBB started winning and made the NCAAs more often than not, Husker fans would get on the bandwagon. That's just how they are.

Sadler has done very little since he got there, but this year, of all years, makes it hard to judge with entrance into a completely new conference.

I'm hoping Larry stays at So. Miss. for a couple more seasons. He owes them. I don't think many programs were knocking on his door, wanting to give him an interview. I think it's a humbler, wiser Larry after the storm that he's been through. At some point, he'll go big again, if his success at Hattiesburg continues. But not for a little while, I hope. (and certainly not to NU)

Eh, sometimes a coach has to take the opportunities when they come, as they may not be there again in the future.
