Re: Iowa State and Kentucky played in 1992 NCAA 2nd round
Hurl Beechum played all the time when he was a junior/senior. We were down by 8-12 most of the second half. Played no defense, neither did Kentucky though.

I remember us being in the game all the way, but obviously we could not stop them. Even with the loss, ISU had validated their selection by beating UNC-Charlotte in the first round. That Kentucky team is the team that also lost to Duke on the Laettner miracle shot at the end.
And also, that was the same year of the classic confrontation between Orr and Vitale on the selection show...

That had to be a fun one to watch. Thigpen and Bayless were playing H O R S E with each other and a few of the Kentucky players.

We had no answer for Mashburn which offset the advantage we had at guard.

It was a track meet. We loved to run (we say we do now, but we don't actually have the guards to do it) and so did Kentucky. Thigpen and Bayless were one of the best guard tandems in the country that year.

Remember what happened to Kentucky 2 games later?? I'll never forget that as an 8 year old kid.

Thigpen may have had the most offensive improvement over the course of his career of any Iowa State player. Don't get me wrong- he was good when he came in, but his shot and scoring ability went through the roof later in his career.

I remember Hurl Beechum despite the fact that he didn't ever play much. Brad Pippet and Howard Eaton? These two I don't remember even though they appear to have had a good game and contributed significant minutes. Hurl was a role player, but played a huge part in the big 8 tourney run with Freddie and Co. I also believe his HS team beat Fred's in the State Championship....although my memory is a bit cloudy

I've got that year's ISU team photo framed in my Cyclone Bar in my basement. I was pretty young, but this was easily one of my favorite ISU squads ever. Thigpen and Bayless were boss. I've seen Eaton around DSM in recent day as well. He was a hustle machine.
That game was close to going our way. Hopefully payback will come this year.

Re: Iowa State and Kentucky played in 1992 NCAA 2nd round
That year the NCAA put a lot of emphasis on the Coaching box and the spoiled *** of a coach Pitino was walking up and down the sideline like he owned the arena. Johnny kept yelling for a T, but non was forthcoming. That surely could have changed momentum. In the press Pitino was asked if one should have been called on him. He just dismissed and said that was Johnny's problem and he was taking a from a great game. I asked Johnny in that summer about it, and true to Johnny who at times messed up peoples names he said "Yeah the F###### Paterno I never liked him anyway."

Re: Iowa State and Kentucky played in 1992 NCAA 2nd round
sorry to post so late on this thread, but I do remember that game... and the biggest thing that stuck out to me was that nearly everyone on Kentucky had 4 fouls on 'em. I remember Freddie shooting a 3 to tie the game late, (but it clanged off the back of the iron... and then a few moments later, it was over. yes, Mashburn was the big name in that game.
