I have an 01 jimmy that was doing the same exact thing.(My kid's car) It lost 3rd gear, so it would try to shift into third, then go back to first. This caused the engine to rev into the 4500 rpm range and go about 45 mph. Long story longer.... needs a complete rebuild to the tune of 2800.00 bucks.....got hooked up with a used tranny for 600.00 thats going in this weekend.

Little bit off-topic:
Has anyone here with a foreign car needed their transmission rebuilt before?

Re: Car issues in Louisville, could use help?
Ok, got the bad news, tranny needs rebuilt. What's a typical estimate range for what it might cost to rebuild it?

Yes I would assume so. If I were you I would dump it and buy a plane ticket. But thats just me.

Dependant upon the internal issues, probably a $1,000 to $2500 range for the rebuild. A used tranny from a parts yard or a rebuilt off a rack would be worth looking into in normal situations when dealing with a 9 year old vehicle. But you are not in a normal situation. I'd consider selling the vehicle "as is" after determining its value after the installation and what it will cost to get there, meaning you will still have a 9 year old vehicle after the tranny work and the vehicle is not going to go up in value at the same level due to its age.
My daughter had the same thing happen in Alabama on the way to Florida on Spring Break a few years ago. After cost estimates, the repair shop bought the vehicle. It was an older vehicle too. By the way, there is a correlation between: college kids+ long road trip+ old vehicle= potential call home to Dad. When she called home I asked if she had her camera. Told her to take a picture of the Exit sign on the interstate because she would never be there again and she could laugh about it years later. She told me to get serious.

Sell it and buy a plane ticket would be the way to go.
