Re: CF Exclusive Conversation: With Royce White

I think I have figured out the problem: Royce White is just way, way too humble, by half or more.

Royce is smart enough to know that in order to do the things that he wants to do, he has to play basketball.

I think it's important we remember that Royce looked at basketball as his way of getting the other things he wants. Basketball is his job, but his music, his philanthropy and all of that are what he wants in life. Basketball is just his way of making those things happen. The guy has a vision. I don't think he has ever kept it secret that he doesn't "love" the game. He loves what the game can bring him. That's how I always took him, anyway.

Royce is an amazing person. Wise beyond his years. His anxiety, his past mistakes, all ended up being blessings. Let that be a lesson for all of us, sometimes the perceived bad things that happen open a lot of doors or allow you to transcend in ways you never thought possible.

And the next time someone gets a 2nd chance.....don't assume they'll screw it up. They just might make it work. I can't even begin to imagine if Iowa State hadn't given Royce that 2nd chance and if Royce wouldn't have taken it. It's pretty neat.

I think that is why so many ISU fans hate to see Royce move on to the next chapter in his life. The guy is so wise beyond his years, it is just amazing. So polished and humble too. I really think he is going to represent our university well in the future, both on and off the court.

Best of luck RW. Thanks for making ISU Basketball matter again.

I didn't think I could admire and respect Royce more for what he's done with his 2nd chance, but after reading that interview, I do. Just a great interview to learn more about this intelligent and unique man, and as a bonus he's made me feel a lot better about Cyclone basketball without him. And I will have a new favorite NBA team next year.

Fun read. I keep coming away more and more impressed with Royce. What I wouldn't give to have had him in Iowa City. It would have been a nice change of pace, both on and off the floor.

I supporty Royce's decision as much as I'd love to see this team next year with him. But my biggest regret is that he can't get the send-off like we give departing seniors. As loud as the crowd was for Scotty, can you imagine what it would sound like for Royce?

Just got a chance to read it this morning. I know it's a little ridiculous to get gushy over a college kid playing basketball, but what a special guy. It would have been nice to keep him here longer, but we were pretty damn lucky to be able to call him ours for as long as we did.

Great article, Chris. Royce is so enigmatic and personable. I truly wish him the best.
