On the Royce part, he is a little surprised that ISU fans are not upset with Royce coming here, using the program to showcase his talents and then leaving after only one year.

He also talks a little about Jake Sullivan, quite a bit on the whole LE story again.

Calls FH "one of the best human beings I have ever been around in my entire life"

Says he has followed ISU basketball much more closely the last couple of years, primarily because FH is now coach.

I used to really like Paul Shirley as a player, but can't stand anything he does or says now. I also don't like his haircut.

Cripes guys. I wish we could just discuss the points he makes in his interview rather than assuming he is a jealous, crybaby, resentful whiner.

I understand his points about Royce, I happen to disagree with some of them because I think he wasn't close enough to the situation to see why Royce is so adored by fans.

And while he has increased his consumption of ISU basketball by "400%" the last two years I doubt he has watched every game and read every box score.

The insight to Royce's anxiety issues is interesting and probably true but I wonder if or how much more severe Royce's case is than most. The comparison to Jake Sullivan's OCD disorder is good and something I hadn't even considered.

Paul has the voice/interview skills for print...

To his point about ISU fans being okay with Royce "using" the program (which seems like a thinly veiled dig at ISU fans imo), it was a mutually beneficial relationship. Fred got Royce to the NBA (with, ahem, Arn Tellem) and Royce helped get us to the NCAAs. I think what Paul seems to forget is that ISU fans are smarter than the average fan and recognize what Fred is doing and thus none of us are surprised by Royce's departure.

Also, we recognize that this is only a good thing for recruiting. Add to that that this team over-achieved and voila - an amicable split between Royce / ISU fans.

My skin isn't cut by a slight breeze, I like Shirleys take on things. He says what he thinks, not what the majority of you want to hear, have to give the guy a little respect for that.

Great post....for those who criticize him with based on past things, be sure to listen to the whole interview. Clears up a lot! He also points out he defended LE back when he was in trouble here at ISU.

I'm not sure he says what he thinks. I think he just says whatever it takes to stir the pot, to get attention, to get a media contract, and to not be forgotten. Not necessarily what he thinks.

I say this without passion; I heard the resentment in his voice. He may well be entitled to that but I find it disingenuous that he's truly surprised by ISU fans attitudes regarding Royce.
